The UHD-BD has incorrect levels and/or raised black levels starting with the very first frame while the BD had perfect blacks throughout. So how exactly is this "clearly deeper blacks" when it's literally the opposite? lmao
I had a good hunch who you were referring to and yes, I've seen similar nonsense from previous reviews. In the end it's the same issue as those ridiculous YT videos you come across; it's all down to the setup and settings used. And that's just me assuming they aren't actually blind.

I picked this up today in the steelbook from Best Buy and it looks fantastic on my Panasonic UB820 & LG CX 65 inch. I don’t get the complaints.

How I felt about this release...

But in all seriousness...
It was totally fine though and I knew it wasn't going to blow me away and be a reference quality disc. Way too much silly drama surrounding it. A solid upgrade, imo.

It’s also a shame how the majority in the comment section of that video are mislead into thinking it’s not a good UHD, and they would rather skip it because of that dude’s misinformation. Smh.

I did leave a message before unsubscribing. He doesn't understand his misinformed and uneducated reviews are a problem, based on his reply, despite so many comments thanking him for saving them money.

His other reviews were mostly bad as well and it was clear he doesn't know what he's talking about. It's easier for him (and hunt) to just block people who call them out

QT shoots on film, watches his dailies on film, but the movies are graded and post-produced digitally, usually in the hands of colourist Yvan Lucas.

Why does QT not insist on a film finish like Nolan does, despite the apparent clout that he has? Because finishing on film is such an antiquated workflow at this point that studios are not willing to spend the money on it unless they're like Warners with Nolan i.e. desperate to keep their golden goose (though Nolan's ****ed off to Universal anyway to make Oppenheimer).

As QT is more nomadic, having never settled at any one studio and preferring the Weinsteins to broker his deals, then he has to shop his projects around and although he's never short of offers his movies aren't mega-budget productions that permit the extravagance of a photochemical finish. Hateful 8 is the outlier as said, but as the visual conceit of that movie - shooting 65mm on Ultra Panavision glass - is about as extravagant as it gets for a $50M production then the film workflow was factored into that. But on OUATIH? Back to a digital intermediate once again and even the 35mm prints were printed from filmouts of the digital master, not some mythical conformed OG negative.
Massively delayed in responding but that all makes a ton of sense! Thank you!

I threw in my old blu and I think I actual prefer to watch it that way. Not that the UHD is bad, it's better in some ways whilst still looking odd and having elevated blacks.

Just chiming in after all the speculation...but I just finished the UHD and it looked wonderful. One of Tarantino's best. Now lets get the Kill Bills, Jackie Brown, Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs up here, too.

Given Miramax is a sub of Paramount now, and as far as I know they aren’t putting new films out under the banner, I would guess if they gave these 4k scans for re-release, they wouldn’t bother swapping the logos out if the original is on the negative.

Great!, so is a different encoding, interesting to see the visual differences or the bitrates EUR vs US

bdinfo anyone?

I'll be comparing the BD to the UHD before I write up anything. Not comparing players, no, as there's no point.
