this is from die hard with a vengance which i am watching, they dont ACTUALLY solve the riddle in the movie even though they get it right, i have it figured out lol, can you? I will post the answer if nobody else can (which im sure you all will).

You have a 5 gallon jug and a 3 gallon jug, how do you fill the 5 gallon jug with exactly 4 gallons???

Take the 5 gallon jug full, and dump 3 into the 3 gallon jug. Dump that water out of the 3.

Dump the 2 left in the 5, into the 3. Then fill up the 5, and dump 1 of that into the 2 that's in the 3!

Yes, It makes sense to me, WHADIWIN?

haha nice thats not how i did it but the result is the same

i said fill the 3 gallon, pour into the 5, fill the 3 gallon again and pour into the 5 until the 5 is full leaving one gallon in the 3. Empty the 5 and pour the 1 gallon into the 5. Then fill the 3 and pour into the 5 leaving you with 4 gallons, your was more efficent though, very nice

I believe your way would be more accurate, because you're dealing with "full" quantities of the jugs, leaving no room for guessing how much water you're moving. Grumpz method works, but the step where you "Then fill up the 5, and dump 1 of that into the 2 that's in the 3!" is totally guessing, unless you have markers on the side of the jug, which would make the entire riddle moot anyway.

If I remember correctly from the movie (it's been a while), being very close to the four-gallon total was key to defusing the bomb, so the most accurate way is going to be the way that I would choose.

Great work by both of you, though!

EDIT: it's not totally guessing.

no his was acurate to, essentially he did the exact opposite as me. Fill the 5 all the way, pour it into the 3 until full leaving 2 in the five. Fill the 5 all the way and pour into the 3 gallon jug which has only 2 gallons in it (1 gallon of free space). That means you had to pour 1 gallon from the 5 leaving 4 gallons. I usually hate riddles because i never get them but this one sure is fun lol

You're right, it's not totally guessing. I went back and looked at it and saw where it really wasn't guessing. It was my mistake. I was thinking about deleting my post, but I'm good with being called out every once in a while if I'm wrong. Zing it up now, because the opportunity doesn't come along too often!

I'm analyzing both methods now and they are both solid. I don't recall which method they used in the movie, but it would be interesting to see what they did. Surely there couldn't be more than a few ways to do this one.

Regardless, you guys rocked it out. Nice work to both of you!

(assuming you didn't just look it up on the movie)

You got me. I even went so far as to declare that I edited the post immediately, and I didn't delete it even though I could have. You can see that I edited within the window of time where the edit doesn't even show up at the bottom of the post. I knew I was wrong pretty quickly!

Nice job!

Ok...ok. Don't beat yourself up over it!

Ok, riddle time!

You've got a castle surrounded by a mote that's 10' across. You've got 6' and 4' plank. That's it!

How you gonna cross the mote!?

FULL MARKS FOR CREATIVITY!

Ah crap!

I ruined it, cuz I left something out. So now, when I add it, you'll know it's relevant to the answer!

CRAP!

The mote is square around the castle!
