The jack o'lantern and the credits really glow in this release. It's awesome. The daytime scenes look a lot better as well compared to the 35th Anniversary Edition. Much more lively but not overly so. The 35th just looks drab. The nighttime scenes look extremely atmospheric with their heavy blues combined with their natural darkness. I have never seen Halloween look this good. The original mono sounds okay. Could sound a lot better, I guess if their were able to work from the original source? I am just glad it is included for purists sake. The original mono is definitely my preferred way to watch this movie. I love this release.

I bought the 35th anniversary blu ray a few years ago. This 4k came in last night and the movie is amazing in 4k! I plan on getting part 2 and 3 real soon.

I apologize as this has probably been discussed before, but last night I was watching the 35th anniversary Blu, and became fixated on a blue line that appears for one shot around 1:12:10. Is this present on the UHD versions? It's a strange sort of distortion that I don't remember seeing with film. It's not a straight, continuous line, and it moves upward a little bit during the shot. It's not a big deal or anything, but what would have caused that?

The second image is brightened to make it more obvious, in case your monitor is calibrated as dark as mine.

We watched this last night since yesterday was Halloween afterall and I did raise a question. Exactly why couldn’t Laurie join Tommy and Lindsey when they left the house to go to McKenzie house and call the police?? Yes I know it’s to help setup the climax but realistically speaking this caught my attention.

Because Laurie knew Michael was coming for her anyway,
with/without kids, Michael was going to do what he came to do,
so that's why Laurie put the kids out of harm's way

Hmmm, a fair assessment.

Just curious, hearing so much positivity about the updated/warmer look the 4K disc now sounds like it has, was there anyone over the past 8 years who preferred to watch the 2007 Blu over the 35th?

Genuinely interested, not saying that the new 4K resembles that in anyway.

I sure did. And I preferred the THX DVD even more. 35th is the worst home video release of Halloween. It’s the only release which doesn’t look like Halloween or film.

Then why would she have her back turned toward him the entire time? The scene clearly implies she thinks Michael is dead. Maybe she thought she’d just stay there to meet the cops when they arrive or she was just too exhausted to leave.

Yes, certainly. The 35th looked like it had been drained of all blood and life. Absolutely unwatchable. 2007 all the way for me.

Why is the 35th unwatchable? Yeah, some of the daytime scenes are a little desaturated, but it just looks like a gloomy day to me. And the nighttime scenes have that bluish tint in some shots that’s absent in the 2007 disc.

Because 35mm film prints are extremely saturated and high contrast. So the 35th is a complete revision of what Halloween looks like. Desaturated look only became a recent fad in the horridly hideous digital age.

While I did NOT prefer the 2007 Blu, I did watch the 35th Anniversary edition with a pretty massive boost in saturation -- as well as a tiny bump of yellow and red in my projector's settings, to bring back a touch of that autumn warmth. Got it looking pretty freakin' close to this new UHD edition, quite frankly; I'm kinda proud of that. And the hi-larious thing is, the only drawback to doing that saturation bump to the 35th Anniversary Edition was that it made the color of the credits go nuclear... which is exactly how they now are in the new UHD edition!

Enhancing saturation a bit helps the 35th significantly; I think it looks very much like the 2021 blu-ray, actually. Very similar color timing.

Edit:

Regrets, Steel breeze. Wasn't parroting you, just slower to post. By the way--off topic alert--do you think Cundey used a blue gel for this shot from H II...or is Shout's steelbook just blue shifted? Right column, second down (nighttime exterior)... With the 'book being from an IP, wondered if the color was correctly rendered...yet dialed out of the negative scans.

I do that too. Unfortunately we on the consumer end have to fix what the lazy, blind/deaf paid professionals (or corporate interns) couldn’t be arsed to do properly, or to put in their bare minimum of effort. If I wanted to watch a nearly black and white movie, I might as well watch Citizen Kane or Schindler’s List instead. We spend thousands of dollars on state of the art OLED TV’s to watch a bleached out nonsense such as the 35th disc or many other just as ugly releases. Makes sense…

Yeah, on that particular comparison the bluer steelbook version looks more "correct" to me, given Cundey's propensity for blue nighttime gels during that era. The interior of the house (seen through the window) looks more "normal" in the steel version, as well.
