I agree, I enjoy this show more than any of the new Trek shows.

The Orville just feels like real Trek with more levity, of course. Seth has more respect for the Roddenberry universe than J.J. and his "buddies" ever did.

I have one friend who I'd discuss episodes with and the Moclan episodes freaked him out... hopefully he'll open his mind enough to keep going. Lol

Seeing season 3 almost feels nostalgic at this point.

You've been watching those toxic nutters on YouTube (Midnight's Edge) haven't you?

Ripping off wholesale isn't respect. If you're stuck in the '90s, I can see what the appeal is. I like *all* TREK, older, old, and new. I don't mind Orville, but pretending it's the heir to the TREK throne is folly.

I think MacFarlane would be the first to tell these people to stop taking rubbish.

'90s TREK. Offering nothing new. Not going boldly where Berman went before 30 years ago.

At least Berman's era was a bit more Roddenberry-esque than not with sociopolitical messages from time to time as well as pure entertainment, which is what Seth is seemingly going for along with some comedic touches.

You say this as if it was a bad thing.

I'd rather them take inspiration from the nineties shows than whatever the hell has the Trek branding these days. Looking forward to the new season.

Retreating back in time. Again: not boldly going.

Anyone who thinks the 90s were the golden era of Star Trek for fans is wearing rose tinted glasses or just wasn’t there. That era of Trek consisted of three shows that at the time were frequently criticised. One for being anti-Trek and anti-Roddenberry (DS9), one for being too bland (Voyager), and another (TNG) which despite being well liked struggled to gain the recognition of TOS and was second best to B5. Over time feelings have softened; DS9 is now highly regarded and we have learned to accept Voyager for what it was. TNG of course remains the flagship of 90s Trek, its status elevated more now than it ever was at the time.

I love Star Trek (though Voyager not so much). I’m also a big fan of The Orville. It is a celebration of the best of 90s style Trek, it is not a declaration of war on modern Trek. It is pathetic and almost heartbreaking to see so called Trek fans weaponise it and turn it into that. If you don’t like modern Trek, that’s fine, but as Roddenberry himself said, he wanted Trek to go on, and he wanted it to speak to future generations about issues that affect them. Modern Trek is doing exactly that for a number of people. If it’s not doing it for you, you just have to accept that. No doubt there’s a certain amount of sadness and frustration in realising a franchise you have loved for years is now no longer talking to you about issues in a way that you can engage with. All part of getting older I guess. Nostalgia is great, but it needs to be kept in perspective.

We were so close to season three and now three more months we have to wait. No doubt it will be worth it though.

Model work is not superior - you're limited to where the camera can go, how close and how far. CG has absolute control of lighting as well. It's not a "Disney edict" - it's why bother wasting money & time edict.
