It is not the exact same frame.

Just excited that even with this non-direct image it has superior detail to the TC 4k version.

The new composite has so much more detail than the existing release. It's stunning.

The bottom registration is no longer washed out by the light and the sun isn't a simple white circle. This is going to be nice.

The sun is way more blown out yet the highlights on the ship are better resolved. Interesting mix.

See, overall, I like the look of things, but I don’t care for this change. The sun looks totally blown out now. And from that distance, the sun should appear as a “simple white circle”. I’m sure there will be exponentially more positives than negatives with this restoration, but tweaks like that make me wince a bit.

Hopefully it's just blown out like that because it's in SDR.

Default sdr is the mind killer i will face my sdr and let it pass and in the end only grey

Maybe the sun HDR green to yellow to cyan highlights got blown and only magenta remain.

If the Enterprise is neutralished, the sun goes reddish magenta vv. So then maybe some ACC made the published 3K pic ^^ greenish?

stb.jpg

note: neutralished jpg is very compressed (80kb) so banding

Considering we have no idea how and when the two images were captured it seems prudent not to get overly concerned just yet. As mentioned prior the grading of the DE is different from the color timing of the TC and since we do not how whether these SDR images are from a properly graded SDR transfer it may not be representative the final product.

I certainly hope they finesse some of the new digital additions such as the shuttle craft docked with the station where there should be mask covering added to a small back portion of the the crafts docking ring.

Another early shot of the Enterprise approaching the inner chamber of V'ger to dock definitely has different look than I would expect but hope that is just preliminary work.

Also hope that one picture of the HDR grading shots of V'ger going critical does not just clip out the restored highlights in the TC 4K version.

One hope that I have with this new edition is fixing the aft torpedo launch from the Klingon Battle Crusier. I've been told the reason this torpedo shot looks bad was because the plates that made up the toredo effect were misaligned.

I remember discovering that second torpedo when I was doing 'frame by frame' examinations of the film when it was on Laserdisc. And I've seen a ton of fan recreations of that opening shot and always a kick when I see how they recreated that second torpedo as well.

Oh, and incase anyone hasn't seen this, there was an unearched visual effect demo reel made by Apogee that was put on YouTube on the on News Year's Eve in 2018 (BEST NEW YEARS EVER!).

Discovering this video was like discovering the Holy Grail. Raw open matte effects shots where some effects don't have all the elements. But the biggest WOW factor? All three Klingon Cruisers firing torpedoes into the cloud! And we even see first Klingon cruiser get hit with the Plasma Bolt when it's destruction was done offscreen.

I also really like that shot of V'Ger's home planet sunrise without the Spock or ring elements. Would LOVE to see that shot in HD.

And here is JTVFX's video of the Klingon Battle where he tries to incorporate these lost shots. I like how his take conveys the idea that two of the Klingon Cruisers retreat while the third one chooses to keep firing torpedoes at the Cloud, hence why it's still facing in the cloud's direction when the Plasma bolt hits it.

The first thing I noticed when I looked at the new pic was that it had a yellow tinge to it, but we'll have to see it in action.

My concern is that the detail makes it look more like a model and it might break the immersion. We'll see.

I could tell early on that even the Director's Edition was on a pretty tight budget during the Kolinahr. They wanted to reshuffle the subtitles to make it less obvious the actors were speaking english. They managed to get the raw footage to put in new subtitles, but they could not clean the footage up which is why it looks so scratchy and dirty compared to other scenes in the film. (On that note, wouldn't it be funny if they used the theatrical takes to redo the scene for the Director's Edition since those shots haven't been used since the laser disc?)

If nothing else, I hope that with all the new material the team has discovered that they'll include it in either a newly repuroposed 'deleted scenes' section or a montage of the film's effects in open matte just like the Apogee video from earlier. That would be such a nice sit through.

They've actually been seen a few times since the Laserdisc!

Both the original early 00's master and the streaming version of the 09 master use the theatrical takes of Spock on Vulcan, the 09 streaming version being a scan of the film with the burned-in subtitles. But the "HDTV" has it's own subtitles, so the clean plates have to be out there somewhere! Let's hope they found it!

The only thing that bugs me is the yellow , green or yellow green tinge.
