Dammit. I guess that making an English dub for Gunbuster is objectively a good thing for the sake of dyslexics and the visually impaired, but it's still annoying to think about how much longer Discotek's Blu-ray set will take to come out because of it.

I would love to have a 4K UHD or a Steelbook Upgrade Version of Fist of The North Star Movie (1986), transferred completely uncensored under supervision by a director or a creator!! Hopefully for the next Mega Discotek Day!

The only problem with that is the director, Toyoo Ashida, is dead. The film elements also have to be found for that to be a possibility, which as far as anyone knows are still in the wind.

So over on the Japanese live action USA thread, there seems to be a lot of confusion as to if Uzumaki is an upscale or not? Justin, or anyone here, is this release an upscale or in HD, but won't look that great due to how it was shot?

I remember thinking that it could've looked better, but that its AV didn't call attention to itself in terms of how bad it was. And I don't care about packaging, so putting something in a steelbook doesn't make any difference to me.
The old blu-ray was upscaled from a compressed Japanese DVD release from 15 years ago. It was bad.

This new blu-ray will be an objective improvement.

I don't doubt that it will look better. It's just that I don't have infinite funds, so upgrading will always trigger the debate of using my money to buy things I don't have versus better versions of things I already have.

And since I live in Canada, Discotek releases are all import orders for me and that makes me a lot more reserved in my purchases. Back when I could get their stuff through Amazon Canada, I was a lot more impulsive.

Maybe next time I watch it, it will look really ugly to me and I will feel compelled to upgrade. I'm probably more forgiving of some of these grimy 90's OVA's because my experience in viewing them was defined by first viewing them on VHS. I do like this OVA, and have watched my current bluray a couple times. So going for the better version might not be the worst investment. We'll see.

They found some real treasures in the Tokyo Lab vault. I wonder if they found Genocyber? Could make for a nice steelbook release if possible. It was even developed at Tokyo Lab.

One thing I'm wondering is if the new release of Violence Jack has improved subtitles, and if the subs for the new Cyber City BD have included more signs, since the old BD left quite a few signs unsubbed.

Somewhere in between. Post production was done digitally, and DEFINITELY not at full 1080p resolution, and then printed back to film, and that film is all there is now. So, fuzzier than straight film with occasional aliasing, but higher res than anything that might've come from straight up SD.

Unfortunately it appears that film elements to Genocyber are gone forever. Some collector friends of ours have shards of them in their collection. SHARDS.

Violence Jack had some improvements made (not a ton –*our usual team did not work on it because it was over the line of what I was comfortable assigning to them). Cyber City is MOSTLY the exact same disc with new video inserted in place of the old encode. We went over that with a very fine toothed comb and it has an absolute TON of sign translations so anything untranslated is completely inconsequential. Minor tweaks were made, but pretty much just for aligning typesetting with the new video.

Re: Fuse, the main upgrade will be to the colorspace. My old process had some colorspace conversion issues that most people will never notice, but virtually everyone that will is in this forum.

Re: AstroRes, that particular comparison of Digimon that got posted by Footlong Shoe was from fairly early in the process and MIGHT not reflect the final product. One of the adjustable things in AstroRes is how thick the line tracing should be. Unfortunately I didn't pull that particular shot so I don't know what episode it's from, but the whole thing has gotten redone a couple of times since then with iterative improvements.

Good news overall. Also, really excited about Nihon Nights. More Japanese live action films is always great.

I do have couple of final questions regarding the line, and not sure how much you can say. I'm just wondering if your upcoming titles will be titles you released on DVD and are upgrading, new titles, or both? If new titles, any chance we will be getting some Toei films?

Great to see Kekkaishi rescued. I held off on buying the Viz DVDs back in the day since I believe it was released in that time when many shows were transitioning to 16:9 and were sort of HD but not really. Definitely going to grab the Blu-ray.

Don't these streams usually give a date for when you can start pre-ordering most of the announced titles? I think Justin said that these were due for release in 3-6 months. So what's the usual wait time until Rightstuf puts the earlier upcoming releases for pre-order?

As far as the new Nihon Nights label goes, we currently cannot say much -- it's still VERY early in its planning stages, but if all goes well maybe we'll have more information by the next live stream, so please stay tuned!

@jsevakis I would love a 4K UHD or an Upgraded Steelbook release of Fist of the North Star Movie (1986) from the original uncensored film elements. But director Toyoo Ashida passed away, should we get a creator to supervise the restoration?

Nothing too much for me on this round. I will probably upgrade Project Ako 2. Not sure if I want to upgrade Cyber City Oedo from the blu ray I just bought in December or the Violence Jack DVD I haven't gotten to yet (last saw these on VHS a while ago).

I will probably pick up the mecha shows eventually. I'm a sucker for anything 80s when it comes to anime.

I would love to see some Shoujo like Aim for the Ace, Miracle Girls or Hime Chan's Ribbon. Same with some magical girls shows especially Nurse Angel Ririka SOS is one I have always wanted to see. They don't seem like something Discotek wants to tackle.

I recognize a handful of older Discotek DVD titles but it’s mostly new stuff/rescues. A lot of live action stuff hasn’t been remastered from film, and upscales don’t make as much sense for live action, so it’s all about what’s available.
