I like 3 better than lost world, but that characters in 3 (outside of grant) are really annoying. I did like Lost World when I saw it in theatres, perhaps I need to revisit it.

There's the sequence of the T-Rex attacking the joined trailers, pushing them off the cliff, and Julianne Moore on the cracking glass, which is still one of the greatest suspense sequences Spielberg has ever done. The Lost World also has iconic moments like the Raptors attacking through the tall grass, which is the image Spielberg said sold him on the movie, and the sequence of the T-Rex roaming through the suburbs and peering in the window at the boy, which was the other thing that Spielberg said he was most passionate about, so passionate even that they threw out the intended ending and added the San Diego ending once they were already shooting, from what I read back in the day. Sure, it also has lowlights, like Goldblum's daughter doing the gymnastics to kick the raptors, and Arliss Howard's truly appalling British accent, but it also has some genuinely dark elements that the first film doesn't have, which are more in line with the books, like Peter Stormare being eaten by the Compys. The third film is just a competent, generic action film, it doesn't have the abysmal low points of The Lost World, but it doesn't reach any of its occasional heights either. Its only iconic moment is unintentional - the dream sequence talking Raptor. ![]() ![]() |

The last one had DV. Stands to reason this one will, too. It's contemporary from the period of time new movies routinely get DV grades on the format. It's universal who tend to more than not for their big ones, additionally.
I'm very confident we'll see Dolby Vision. Maybe even HDR10+ as well. Whats curious is will it be atmos or DTS:X. edit: Oh, you may not be talking about new movie... heh |

I really like The Lost World. As a teenager when I first saw it in theaters I liked it even better than Jurassic Park 1. Obviously it's not as important a film, but it's just so much fun. Now a days I'd probably rank it tied second place with Jurassic World. Those are basically the three I like. I thought the second one with Pratt was a catastrophe. Hopefully the third one will make up for it.

The Lost World has the benefit of Spielberg directing. Even in his weakest films, no one else can block a scene like he can. He took advice from John Ford and it shows. Each director after him misses the mark because they lack what he has.

And when you throw in the incomparable Jeff Goldblum as the main star, there’s your magic package in full (which is no slight on the wonderful Sam Neill at all, but c’mon, Jeff is Jeff). I’ll defend TLW fervently to the end (even though its music score was markedly less wondrous than JP’s—Spielberg didn’t fail us, John Williams did!).

Y'know, there's something to that. No matter what you think of The Lost World and (I'm takin' a left turn here, follow me) Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull... BOTH of those films would've been elevated by a better Williams score. I watched both fairly recently and was really surprised by their "dud" scores, especially considering how solid I feel the recent Star Wars scores have been. Wish he'd been on his "A" game for Lost World and Crystal Skull... or even showed that he cared at all, beyond the paycheck.

The Lost World's score is very underappreciated. It sets the tone along with the aesthetics.
I actually appreciate the film a lot more than I did when I saw it as a little kid. There's so much it gets right as an adaptation of the book (those aesthetics, that mood, the cast) but then it sells itself short by jumping off the island way too soon and lingering so little on the mystery of the island in the first act. The novel's first section is some of Crichton's best work making a setting and how it was turned into a bit of a quick intro note...yea, not the best. The deleted scenes should have been left in too. They round it out much more and are sorely missed. Spielberg's desire to trim it all down to 2 hours did not work in its benefit. JP's film adaptation was pitch-perfect in that it captured the entire point of the novel and everything about it even though quite a bit wasn't adapted. It's essentially missing the intro like TLW's novel but it doesn't lack at all in comparison. And a little footnote about JP3: I appreciate that one a lot more than I used to, if only for the darkly comedic bent it has and the direction. Honestly I prefer it over Jurassic World any day because at least it looks the part. Cash-in? Definitely. But not like today's cash-ins. |

The Lost World score is stunning. It's totally different from Jurassic Park, but I think it's very nearly as good, I wouldn't put it anywhere near the forgettable Crystal Skull score.
This track is the highlight of the Lost World score for me: The score is dark and muscular, it's not light and filled with awe like JP. Instead, it's got a driving, relentless energy that suits the film. I think it's Williams near the top of his game. ![]() |

Some brilliant and kind person put up the "campers on the edge of the cliff" sequence from The Lost World, but with the score isolated.
I would say this (along with the earlier portion of this sequence, with Julianne Moore, on the cracking glass) is one of the single greatest action/suspense sequences Spielberg has ever done, up there with the ferry sequence in War of the Worlds. There is absolutely nothing on this level of technical craft and sheer cinematic genius in JP3, or the more recent sequels/remakes: Last edited by James Luckard; 03-21-2022 at 06:14 PM. |

And yes to the score. John Williams is one of the aforementioned people bringing his A-game. The score is in no way lesser than its predecessor, it's just different. It's aggressive, tribal, primeval. Befitting of the film it accompanies. We're no longer in the man-made technological wonder of Jurassic Park; this is a world reclaimed by nature and ruled by creatures that walked the earth millions of years before us. |

I love this comment that someone wrote about John Williams's score on that YouTube video of the "campers on the cliff" video I posted above:
"This is what happens when you have a composer who actually scores the movie - not just sits in a studio, writes up some suites, and lets an army of proteges chop it into the finished product." |
