It's going to be a lot fun looking for all the changes on subsequent viewings after watching it the first time for the actual movie experience. It should have lots of rewatchability value.

I have an app for the Mac called 4K Video Downloader. I don't know if there's a Windows version. Downloads YouTube videos easily. I use it for times like this when something's up and it might get pulled.

It took them a whole day, but Paramount finally came down on my tweet and thus locked me out of my account. No gripes about it. Their content, their rules.

I also have no regrets. SO MANY fans have been waiting for this new version for a long time. I was extremely happy that many got to see it before it was blocked on my twitter.

That's pretty shitty of them. Who would complain about free promotion?

And then go on to release region free discs. I wish I could stop trying to figure why the world is so ass backwards...

If you’ve got an intense internet in Robert Peak as an artist, Heritage Auctions has had some original pieces up for auction recently and currently.

Not sure how I missed this thread…

To confirm (and not wishing to look like a Bellsprout 15 pages in) this release will be the same as the Special Longer Version found on LD with the extra 12mins of footage.

it... Is... Not...

*clears throat*

The original Director's Edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture was released on November 6th, 2001. This edition incorporates some of the added footage that was seen in the 'Special Longer Version' such as Uhura boasting about Kirk, McCoy's extended entrance, Ilia healing Chekov and Spock having sympathy for V'Ger before the climax.

That edition also incorporated a few new special effects shots that were designed and implemented with the intent of looking like it could have been created back in the day if the film had more post-production time.

The problem with the original Director's Edition was that everything was done in standard definition. Back in 2001 there was no 4K, blu-ray, or any home video high-definition releases. So when the next format eventaully came along, there was no HD source for the Director's Edition so for the past two decades, we've been stuck with that DVD.

For this new edition, everyone who worked on the original version was brought back and they've redone the film from the ground up. Not only is everything being done for a 4K presentaiton, they're also taking individual effect elements and re-rotoscoping them. The resulting video will not only look sharper than the previous presentation, it will also fix some of the issues that plagued the recent 4K disc, like the long shot of the Enterprise leaving Drydock.

So far, everyone involved has assured fans that a disc release will be coming. They just need to clear the Paramount + streaming window in order to get there. This is great news because this will give the crew even more time to work on the film if there is still any work needed to be done or any missed fixes they inded to incorporate. That happened on the TNG blu-ray sets.

As of this post, there has been no announcement for a release of the SLV on home video.

Having just watched the 4K release last night I’m curious as to how much better this could look with the Directors edition? I understand some of the visuals will be different and updated but will the actual scan of the movie be of superior quality too?

As I point out on my site and in the gallery I made, there are a lot of restoration errors that happened during cleanup that presumably won't be present in TDE.

So why do we think they pulled the trailer, was the April 5th date wrong/changed or did the trailer as cut just feature too much Stephen Collins? If they’re waiting to announce it at an event, Mission Chicago is soon but still after April 5, I don’t know where else they’d do it.

It was leaked and WonderCon is next weekend with a Star Trek panel.

I wish we were getting this version too. Overall I like the Director's Edition, but just like Star Wars I find the presence of CGI in a 70s film to be really jarring.

Even so I'm really looking forward to this release.

No way they would go to such extremes in the restoration and make so many truly subtle changes while screwing up one of the most obvious and forefront aspects of the color grading....right?
