• Brand New 2K Masters
• NEW Audio Commentaries by Novelist and Critic Tim Lucas
• Limited Edition O-Card Slipcase
• Optional English Subtitles

THE MYSTERIOUS DR. FU MANCHU (1929) B&W 82 Minutes 1.20:1 Not Rated
[Show spoiler]The diabolical doctor makes his talkie film debut in The Mysterious Dr. Fu Manchu, based on the first book in Sax Rohmer’s classic series. During the Boxer Rebellion, Dr. Fu Manchu, deviously played by Warner Oland (Charlie Chan in Paris), saves the life of little Lia Eltham; but soon after, his own wife and child are killed by the allied troops. He takes revenge by hypnotizing the now grown Lia, played by screen great Jean Arthur (A Foreign Affair), to do his evil bidding. The world’s most notorious supervillain is born in this Pre-Code chiller from director Rowland V. Lee (Tower of London). Co-starring Neil Hamilton (Commissioner Gordon of TV’s Batman) as Dr. Jack Petrie and O.P. Heggie (The Bride of Frankenstein) as Inspector Nayland Smith.

THE RETURN OF DR. FU MANCHU (1930) B&W 73 Minutes 1.20:1 Not Rated
[Show spoiler]The fiendish Dr. Fu is back with a vengeance in The Return of Dr. Fu Manchu, as the evil criminal genius continues his campaign of cruelty on the foggy moors of the English estate where Lia Eltham and Dr. Jack Petrie are set to marry. Director Rowland V. Lee (Son of Frankenstein) returns along with Warner Oland (Charlie Chan’s Secret), Jean Arthur (Easy Living), O.P. Heggie (The Count of Monte Cristo) and Neil Hamilton (Tarzan the Ape Man) for this sequel that’s more menacing, more exciting and more bloodcurdling than the first.

Yes i remember it was someone who worked for VS. He said he wasn't sure about them releasing more MGM titles or getting another deal with them after their current deal ends.

Sandpiper vs Twilight Time:
I think what they are trying to say is that the Sandpiper release of Under Fire uses the same style of font and layout as an Olive release and not that the Under Fire Sandpiper release is similar to the Twilight Time release. At least, that's how I read it as.

IF that's the case, I'd love to see Kino re-release Billy Crystal's MR. SATURDAY NIGHT with all the extras that Olive dropped. I've got the old MGM DVD of that one and it's loaded with deleted scenes, bloopers, behind the scenes featurettes and a commentary with Crystal. ALL dropped when Olive put it out onto blu. Insane!

Does anyone know who holds the rights to the 1938 film “Algiers” with Charles Boyer and Hedy Lamarr?

That was such an amazing movie, and so is the 1948 version called Casbah with Tony Martin and Peter Lorre.

I’m just amazed these haven’t seen home video releases in over two decades. If Kino has a chance to pick them up would be pretty great.

I was wondering about Algiers, too. I'm also curious about another Boyer title: Tovarich. Not sure who owns it.

Hoping KL can manage to get Tank Girl. Appears to be an MGM film, and the Shout Factory blu-ray is OOP and quite difficult to obtain.

Pretty sure Algiers is public domain, and no clue who would have the proper elements for it. It's never seemed to have any type of restoration. Turner Classic aired it a couple months back, and it was from a pretty substandard source for them. Casbah was released by Universal, but I think they only distributed it, so not sure what the situation is with that one.

Tovarich should be with Warners.

Sellers was ill when he made this and it shows; but, as a Peter Sellers fan, I'd pick it up in a second.

I was thinking about Algiers the other day. Had no idea was public domain. I hope someone finds some decent elements and releases it to blu-ray someday.

KLI is this something you guys have explored or is this title not of interest to you?

The Boys in the Band (1970)
The Devil's Disciple (1959)
The Jericho Mile (1979)
The Reivers (1969)
X: The Man with X-Ray Eyes (1963)

I wouldn't say they use the same layout as Olive Films.

The disc layout is very similar, actually. The back is too, apart from the logos being on the top instead of the bottom. Look at the photo framing, the specs and the copyright info. Very, very similar.

Their stock pic templates are pretty much identical to Olive too, and they have a heavier emphasis on light orange with some of their cover art, just like Olive did.

There has not (yet?) been a corresponding price drop, so this may be more or less a low stock notice. (The Reivers is $7.99 because it is part of the March into April sale.)

Related: ten WSL titles increased in price from $7.99 to $9.99: The Couch Trip, Crossing the Bridge / Indian Summer, Finders Keepers, The Last Command, Late for Dinner, Love at Large, Miracles, Phobia, Sinbad of the Seven Seas, and Special Delivery.

Also, Alexander Sokurov's Faust is no longer found via on the WSL list (but it appears to remain available for $4.99 for now).

It doesn't look, what I'd consider, similar based on the Olive titles I have, but maybe it's only similar to certain titles.

I also would pounce on a good quality Blu-ray of "Algiers". Hedy Lamarr is wonderful in it. And Gene Lockhart was deservedly Oscar nominated for great supporting work. Even more exciting would be a nice looking Blu of "Ecstasy", That's the 1933 Czech film that first made Lamarr famous. When the picture's mentioned now it's usually in reference to the sexual candor and brief nudity that made it notorious in its day. But it's actually a fine film beautifully photographed and sensitively realized by all concerned. There's very little dialogue; the thing almost registers as a silent - a very good one. I believe a European film festival a couple of seasons ago was promising a newly restored print. So maybe we might see a topnotch Blu-ray yet.
