I based my earlier assertion that the 4K will include a Blu-ray on the listing in this site's database. It reads:

Quote:
Discs
4K Ultra HD
Blu-ray Disc
Two-disc set (1 BD-100, 1 BD-50)
(And yes I know that pre-release info on blu-ray.com may not necessarily be accurate.)

Also, for what it's worth, the announcement as it appeared in the News section of this site says:

Quote:
Paramount has revealed that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray the Director's Cut of Robert Wise's Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

But that was my point, the News article mentions the inclusion of a Blu-ray that is not mentioned anywhere else, including the official press release.

No one would buy it. Quality of the transfer? Well, that's definitely something that a lot of users talk about even with transfers that get near perfect scores. And what has always been annoying with high def transfers? Reading that an alternate cut will never look as good as the theatrical. We just came off of the Life Force announcement that despite the director's cut getting a new 4K scan, SHOUT chose to stick with the theatrical because that was the only 'negative source. So why not try something along those lines for a movie that's just about to be released?

And boom! My concerns about the quality of the SLV scenes. Would Paramount have cut the negative? Would those scenes have been lost in the editing of the TV version? I don't know, but by gosh we have experienced worse stories in this fourm.
An April Fool's joke should at least be funny once you know what the joke was.

And let me tell you Mate, if you have to spend a paragraph explaining why your little "joke" was funny, you should at least allow for the possibility that it wasn't really very funny at all. And perhaps consider who the "fool" in your April Fool's joke is?

Well I was trying to be funny by saying you weren't funny needing to upscale your joke but that kind of backfired.
Nevermind, the lengths we go to for a laugh...

This same joke was posted on the Star Trek: TMP FB group and everyone had a laugh.

Not so much anymore, but with this, I'll make an exception.
The special features on the TNG sets, the ENT sets, the Roddenberry Vault and the Journey to the Silver Screen were all so great - hoping we continue to get stuff at that consistent level of quality.

Not sure how I feel about the nice new smooth look they describe for a few very grainy sequences I like how they are finishing deleted scenes though even if they won’t incorporated back into the film.

I just finished reading that article and came here to say the same thing… this quote from David C. Fein is quite alarming:

Quote:
It’s cleaned up, and one of my goals was, early on, I told everybody: let’s do everything we can to take anything that’s in the film that takes you out of the film out, like the huge grain, that’s suddenly all you’re looking at is grain going by. It can’t lose the detail because there’s so much beauty in what we’re seeing. But that grain distracted you. Like the big shot where the Enterprise is coming out of V’Ger and all you saw is blue with lots of grain. Now it’s smooth, it works without losing the quality. That’s the thing. There’s so much love in it, and giving us the experience of exhilaration at moments, that’s not the word that I ever would have used for the film before. So my greatest hope is that people will see it for what it is. It’s a film for 2022 and I’m so excited for everyone to be able to see it.
Errr…

The Enterprise model used in the movie is on display at my work...pretty cool to gawk at it up close. Right outside my office is the Space Dock model used in III, IV, and TNG.

Perhaps the re-compositing of the shots has brought down the amount of grain from what it was back in the day. Maybe the live action shots and the special effects shots now have a consistent amount of grain rather than fluctuating wildly.

I think I'll give David the benefit of the doubt when it comes to handling of the grain. You think he wouldn't know of TMP's handling over the decades?

I have not seen the first 6 movies. Should I wait for this to come out before watching the rest of them? I normally like to watch the director’s cut or the unrated version over the theatrical version.

You might find it an interesting expereince if you watch the theatrical first and the Director's Edition second. Especially this new one coming out!

The trailer is giving me some major "overuse of DNR" worries. Shatner's face looks odd in a couple of shots. He looks waxy. No grain in site. Looks too clean for a movie shot in the 70s. Will have to wait for the reviews and screencaps of course but it's discouraging.

We get a format that can truly capture the look of film and this is what we do with it.
