This is odd and seems to me to point to some other variable being at issue. We've PMd about this but I'm wondering, especially given the quantity of discs you play on the one player, if a cleaning isn't in order . . .

I tried the washing trick tonight, washing the disc that had the most skipping problems of the three with dish soap. As I was drying it, I saw something.

About 8-10 tiny hairline scratches, all parallel, on one edge of the disc.

I never did anything that could have caused them. They must be manufacturing damage.

They're not visible if you just look straight down at the disc, they're not deep scratches, they're only visible if you hold the disc at exactly the right angle, they're into the very outermost surface of the polymer.

At least I know why that first disc was so error prone. It gets returned tomorrow.

I looked at the other two under the same light, and they have no visible scratches. I tried one of those again, and it skipped very slightly about 11 mins in. No picture breakup this time, but still annoying.

I'm going to try opening the player and checking for dust, as suggested in the player thread.

try washing the other two, if they had less problems to begin with they have a better chance that the washing trick could work

it's not the slightest bit risky, not once disc has ever gone bad or gotten worse from washing and some number have been 100% fixed, some studios don't even accept exchanges for bad discs unless you tell them you have tried the washing trick first. But then you can also try the player maybe dust or smoky build up on the laser emitter/pickup

Has anyone been able to make any comparisons between the HDR10 of the disc and the D+ Dolby Vision stream? HMV has got this up in a 2 for £30 deal and so I wanna pop off on it, just curious if there's any negligible differences first.

It'll be in a 2 for £24 soon enough, I'm waiting for that.

I didn't notice any major differences, tho I hardly conducted an extensive A/B testing or anything.

Still, it's easily the most cherished addition to my collection in at least 5 or 6 years, musicals simply don't get much better than this.

I've given up on the US UHD disc after 3 copies that all have problems with the image breaking up, 2 of which I returned.

I'm planning to buy the UK disc, because it'll have been produced at an entirely different plant in Germany instead of Mexico, and also because it has a different disc master, since it has different audio options.

The US disc has:
English - Dolby Atmos
English - 2.0 descriptive audio
French - 5.1 Dolby Digital
Spanish - 7.1 Dolby Digital Plus

Can anyone confirm which audio options the UK UHD disc has?

The UK back cover image says:
English - Dolby Atmos
English - 2.0 descriptive audio
Italian 7.1 Dolby Digital Plus

That would be fewer language options than the US disc, which would presumably mean more space for the video, which would be great.

However, the listing here for the UK UHD says it has:
English: Dolby Atmos
English: Dolby TrueHD 7.1 (48kHz, 24-bit)
French: Dolby Digital Plus 7.1
German: Dolby Digital Plus 7.1
Italian: Dolby Digital Plus 7.1

I'm not sure why the listing here has both an English Atmos and an English 7.1 track listed. The same two are listed here for the US disc, but the US disc only has the Atmos.

The French and German tracks are not listed on the back of the UK artwork, are they really on the disc?

Thanks!!!!

I don’t have an actual answer as I don’t own it yet, but here are some FYIs:

Disnee just recycles the video encode when doing discs with different language sets, not that the extra 2 Mb/s from losing those DD+ tracks would make any difference whatsoever.

And the listings here pretty much always include TrueHD 7.1 for anything in Atmos but they’re not referring to a separate discrete track, just the ‘bed’ of the Atmos.

I had no playback issues, nor did a friend of mine, so the problems in this thread sound like a bad batch of discs or a problematic player.

Yep, I'm not sure there'd be much point in that, unfortunately.

Home video departments are unresponsive (in my experience) even when there's a demonstrable technical error like incorrect black levels, and this is a flaw that's much more subtle.

My three discs all played fine on one of the four players I tried.

I think it's an unlucky combination of minor production problems that caused tiny imperfections in the discs, and my player being unable to handle and compensate for those imperfections.

Since the problem can't be reproduced identically on all players, I'm just gonna buy the UK disc and hope for the best.

I've already watched the 4K twice on the X700 and never had issues. It is definitely player-related.

It is, indeed. However, it happened (to varying degrees) across three out of four players I tried, on all three discs.

Geoff D answered the first of my two questions, thanks!!!

Can some kind soul who owns the UK UHD answer the other question?

The French and German 7.1 tracks listed here are not listed on the back of the UK artwork, are they really on the disc?

James, have you PMd owners of the UK disc? In my experience with these kinds of questions, doing so raises the likelihood of a timely responsive reply compared to posting in the general thread.

Did some research for you. I had forgotten which player I had watched it on. After some inspection it has flaws on the X700, it skips on the 11:34 mark. However, it runs flawlessly on the Sammy K8500. You’re not alone. It’s definitely player-related. Hopefully a firmware fixes this issue.

Yep, 11:34 is right about where one of my three discs skipped/broke up as well on my player.

The other two discs skipped at different spots, however. The first disc broke up/skipped about 3 mins in, as the Jets assemble and the one Jet hops across the hood of a car.

I've ordered the UK disc. It should be here on May 3. Amazon US has a sale right now on it, free shipping through Amazon Global Store, which was a good deal. I saved $12.
