i regret to inform everyone that the information that i have provided is completely inaccurate.. i truly appologize and i hope it doesnt happen again..

just yesterday i realized this mistake.. and while holding my head low.. in shame.. i finally got the courage to type this to everyone..

since i began on this forum (aswell as others) i had been running my system through analog.. yes rca wires R/L from the bluray to the rcvr.. oh how ashamed i am..

just yesterday i plugged in an optical cable from the bluray to the rcvr... DIGITAL AUDIO..

HOLY CRAP.. WHAT HAVE I BEEN MISSING!!!!!!!!!

i can now truly say.. damn this sub can play. not to mention how clean the audio is .. funny how this works.. but my normal listening level was at -30dB at the rcvr volume now I HAVE TO listen to it at -40dB ... and the sub plays just as good as before..

im sold ... now i just have to way my options of getting a newer rcvr with hdmi.. can the difference be as drastic..

wow, so this means that you weren't experiencing actual 5.1 surround sound and only stereo through 5 speakers?!? and no lossless audio?!? i'm speechless!!! you definitely want to upgrade to hdmi if possible so you can get lossless 5.1 with your blu-rays. you are truly missing out

may i ask how you only now became aware of your error?

on a side note, i just ordered my pa-120 this evening and am hoping to get it by sometime next week. can't wait!

for ome reason something told me to look at the manual and figure out why i wasnt seeing the DIGITAL display on the rcvr.. so i finally broke down and bought the optical cable.. i was only using a single right/left audio patch cords from the blu-ray out to the rcvr in... and letting the rcvr divide everything... it seemed to work,,, but just not aswell..

yeah, you can't get real 5.1 with just plain ol' rca cables you should definitely use an hdmi cable so you can enjoy your lossless audio with your blu-rays. the clarity is unmatched!

you CAN get 5.1 dolby digital/reg dta sound from an rca cable (nothing lossless thoush, just lossy audio)

plug the cable into the output of the bluray player spdif/coax line (uaually an orange adaptor)
then plut it into the coax input of your receiver
ONLY ONE RCA PLUG IS NEEDED.

they have these coax/spdif outputs on the back of cable/satellite boxes too!

dont use the white/red colored inputs/outputs.....use ONE rca and use the orange input/output

now that im experiencing the wonderful sound of digital (due to optical cable) I cant imagine anything better ,,,,

once I get over my excitement with this format then I will consider an hdmi rcvr

I was going to do this but the rcvr only had one coaxial input for cd player.... I wasnt sure if it would work..... but I have like 4 optical inputs so I used them instead,,, gonna buy another cable for the HD cable box

i think that upgrading your receiver should definitely be next on your list. take your time to save up though...no rush

oh.. im going to wait.. but that will be a next move.. if i dont upgrade my rears..

just watched CARS... wowzers. heard bass notes that i didnt even realize before.. and this was after i turned the bass down even more ,, an extra 6db.. .. im falling in love all over again.. my son kept looking back at the rear speakers.. it was funny... what a huge difference that lil cable made..

as for the john mayer blu-ray... the way it played was odd to me.. im strictly a 2 channel audio man.. and listening to that disc was a lil strange..
there is a song i think its titled everyday.. i could be wrong.. its him a bass player and then a drummer.. when i walked to each speaker to see what was going on... each speaker seemed to be playing the same thing.. but when i sat in the sweet spot.. it all seemed to blend in, kind of freaky,,, more freakier than the PHANTOM CENTER.. and the rears were playing as an echo effect..
i take it this is normal..

You need to upgrade your receiver. You are still in for many more surprises. HD audio improves subwoofer response, in some cases, greatly compared to its lossy counterparts. I am still in a bit of shock. You never realized you were only running stereo? Did you make sure your BD player was set to get you the best audio possible?

i wasnt running stereo... it still played in 5.1 but just not in digital..


and as far as the bluray player is concerned its at default setting.. please dont tell me that there is more... will i have to keep lowering my rcvr volume.. i am already having to turn my rcvr down from -30db to -40dB for normal movie watching and reducing the sub an extra 6dB

i believe you were actually running stereo through 5 speakers by using the rca cable, not actual 5.1.

didn't watch/listen to the john mayer blu-ray but in my experience with concert dvds/blu-rays, the rear channels are usually used for the audience noise (claps, cheers, whistles, etc.) while the front sound stage is for the band/performer. does the blu-ray have a 2.1 track in addition to a 5.1 track?

yes there is an option for 2.1

before when I played movies I did get all vocals in center,,, left/right information in those speakers and the rear surround.... the difference now is that its cleaner,,louder ,, more detailed and dynamic.

using optical, you should be able to get 2.1 lossless audio, but not lossless 5.1

wow... maybe I was running just left/right... and somehow the rcvr used that information to separate the channels to imitate 5.1....
im hearing information that I never heard before..
like bugs life
the waterdrop/leaf telescope,,, the sound the water is making when looking through it...
and the megaphone part ,, before that initial feedbackreverberated was there but now its throught the princess speach... and the first grasshopper alarm,, I only heard the ones played in front,, not the ones in rear

and bass response is 3 dimensional... love that bass response...

Yeah, you were most likely just getting a regular stereo signal (not even uncompressed) and were having it matrixed to 5.1. You are in for an even bigger surprise with lossless surround sound. Let's not even mention 7.1 yet. Not many movies have 7.1 but most of the videogames coming out and that are out that I have all utilize 7.1. Let me tell you, the difference the extra two speakers makes is simply incredible. The Uncharted 2 beta uses 7.1. I had a friend over and while playing the game, he got mad that it was raining outside again. I told him later that was just the videogame. This was his reaction:

Aramis, how is this subwoofers performance in terms of music? and I see it has a Volume knob, is that the same as the gain?? with the knobs on the back about how far up is your volume and where is the crossover set on the back of the sub, 120 or 240?

I think someone may have blown my sub... Kids turning it on and off while in use and I think there is a major issue with the AA, so I may go this route.. I don't know, we will see what the wife'll let me do... I am so so fustrated.

I have a large room and need dual subs to fill the volume ..:
I have done a lot of critucal listening with various types of music and used to compete in car audio sound quailty

my honest opinion with listening to music at normal levels.....its great,,,, have I heard better yes,,, but for the money im completely happy and satisfied with my purchase of both of my subs
btw I hardly ever casually listen to music.... im always seated with eyes closed and concentrating on vocal/instrument placement(imaging),,, soundstage width/depth/height,, and seamless audio response,, accurate reproduction of music
