Oboler claimed that journalists wrote rave reviews about the 3D experience even when they had only seen it flat, so it must be pretty special!

Hondo (1953) - The rights have reverted back to the Wayne family.
The Glass Web (1953) - Music rights issues. Will likely never be released on home video.

Soon, 24 of the 50 golden age films will have been released on 3-D blu-ray.

It could reach 26 if Hondo and Southwest Passage are released. A minor miracle, when you take into consideration that Sony and Warner Bros. have only released a minority of their total golden age 3-D titles.

Assuming our guess is correct, and Bwana Devil is coming, then yes, that's 24 of the American and 2 foreign titles (El Corozan y la Espada and Il Piu Comico Spettacolo Del Mondo). I wouldn't rule out Cat Women of the Moon, Hannah Lee or Money From Home yet, either. In fact, if the rumor of Bwana Devil is true, that gives further hope to Money From Home.

We've done extremely well in relation to vintage 3D movies on 3DBR. All but two of the 60s titles are available, most of the mainstream 70s titles are out, and most of the major ones from the 80s are out. Let's not forget that just ten years ago, none of this was out until fall 2012. We've come a long way in a decade!

There's a short list of folks responsible for bringing us these titles and they include a relative handful of stalwarts at various studios and indie blu ray labels.... but it's topped by the persistent, and consistent, tail-wagging-the-dog folks at 3D Film Archive.

I'd been toying with the idea after the Warner Bros. releases, the initial Creature from the Black Lagoon release and then the Man in the Dark release, but it was 3DFA's gorgeous release of Gog that got me off the dime to buy a 3D TV set (3X the cost of a comparable 2D set...). And ever since I've had a ravenous appetite for classic 3D content which 3DFA far above all other providers -- almost singularly, really -- has worked to satisfy.

Software drives hardware sales ... content is king ... and I have to imagine 3DFA is responsible for selling more 3D home viewing equipment than most anyone else.

I look forward to hopefully many more 3DFA projects.

If HONDO has reverted to the Wayne family has there been any chatter about a pending release?

Nothing directly.

Bob did mention this recently.

Hondo would fit Kino Lorber's criteria.

I know the issues with the Glass Web and the music rights. I saw it at play at the Aero a few years ago and I thought it was pretty good. Does anyone have insight on why Universal would go to the trouble to scan the film and create a digital master for a movie that might get screened once every few years? Did they scan it and planned on releasing it on Blu-ray before they realized the problem with the music?

And I think this part has been covered before, so forgive me, but the music rights are a world wide problem (i.e. no region B), correct?

I saw it at the Aero too. I'm glad it wasn't at the Egyptian. Parking was free and a short walk. I don't think it's been screened in SoCal since then.

At the time (pre-Covid), Universal was doing very well financially, and their archive was allocated money to restore some of the studio's library. They probably knew that digitally preserving The Glass Web would never be paid for through retail sales, so they decided to do it themselves while they had the opportunity.

As far as a Region B release, Universal's lawyers don't seem to want to look into the possibility at all.

Yes.

Very nice PQ too. The only issue I recall noticing was a matte painting shot when a car was driving near a cliff. The matte painting and the foreground didn't quite gel correctly.

If I'm not mistaken, The Glass Web DCP is open matte.

So…what happened to I, THE JURY? Bob deleted his announcement and asked that the devoted thread be deleted. This does not bode well.

Just want to say that no matter what happens, nothing can change my respect and gratitude for Bob and the 3DFA. He has kept fighting for us in the face of low odds, greed, and indifference. Thanks again for everything you do!

Classicflix edited their announcement at HTF. They will be releasing a 3-D blu-ray, but 3DFA's involvement is no longer mentioned.

By appearances, it looks like a prominent film archivist poster at HTF got upset at the idea of the 3DFA needing to edit UCLA's 3D master, and now the 3DFA is not involved anymore. The nonsense drama continues with this movie.

If vertical alignment issues still exist, I hope the 3DFA can be contracted to correct them. If the previous complaints from the TCM viewer were in error and the master is stereoscopic perfect, that's great---release it as is. I'll buy it regardless. I know we all want the best presentation possible, including ClassicFlix.
