I am new to all of this stuff so bear with me....i have full metal jacket, dark knight and goodfellas all on blu-ray. Full metal jacket has soo much noise and grain in it. Goodfellas has some and the dark knight has some as well. Does every movie have some scenes with this?

some intentional, some due to the original material used to create the blu-ray, some, well, you get the picture.
there are a lot of blu-rays out there that have a prestine look to it, almost glassy enough to reflect no grain at all, and there are others, which are spackled like hell. its a matter of preference, but then again, it depends on what appeals to you, and what bothers you as well. movies that do not have or have minimal amount of grain are... 5...4...3... |

Usually movies like that have no grain, but I think (I haven't seen it on Blu yet) Sin City has intentional grain. Also, almost all CG animated films have no grain.

For the OP, many films use grain to emphasize certain aspects of the film (eg Quantum of Solace) or as a stylistic choice (eg: 300, Miami Vice). I personally love the look of grain, but that is just a personal preference. Last edited by Suntory_Times; 06-15-2009 at 05:35 AM. |

A minor nitpick, but that shows how complicated this issue can be. There is no grain in Miami Vice since it was shot on HD digital cameras. While movies like 300 have deliberately added artificial grain back to a digital image, that is not the case with Miami Vice. What appears to be grain is in fact digital noise that appears during the extremely low-light nighttime shooting conditions. So while any film shot on film has a grain structure, it may or may not be visible on Blu-Ray depending on the quality of the original elements, the kind of film stock used, and how the film was processed during its transfer to video. Even movies shot on HD may have artificial grain added back to them because the filmmakers like the look of grain (which is rather ironic.) A movie shot on HD may have digital noise that looks like grain. In some cases, any movie, whether shot on film or on video may have digital noise that is an artifact of the compression process. The bottom line is that you will indeed see grain or noise on Blu-Rays. In most cases, it is a part of the film and is supposed to be there. (The exception would be the noise that is a compression artifact, but that is less common.) |

^ Miami Vice is crawling with grain (albiet digitally added grain, although I may be mistaken on this point) as well as digital noise. Also HD cameras do have a natural digital grain (albiet often very hard to notice/see).
Also, I agree it is a complicated issue, but i'm still amazed that people hadn't noticed it at the cinemas (I remember noticing it when I was ten [or nine] years old at the movies and at first wondered what it was but was able to figure it out with a quick trip to the library). Also 300 was not shot Digitally. It was shot on film at the speed of ISO 500 which lead to the huge amounts of grain you see in the final product. Whether grain is there or not I will enjoy it as long as I know thats what the director intended the movie to look and not some guy turning the DNR up in the studio. Even if the director himself applies heavy DNR I am fine as long as it is his or hers intentional look. |

I thought noise and grain were two different things. Both enemies of pristine PQ no doubt, but different causes and look make them very different to me.
I think noise is the better of the two evils, since its how its handled that effects most viewers. Its usually left be. Grain on the other hand is tackled without care and attention in some cases. What makes it worse is that some studios have proved with the right care and attention it can be dealt with satisfactorily to everyone. However, budgets and time constraints usually win the day in this bad bad world. |
