It will be interesting to see if this movie will be the "popular" movie at the Academy Awards next year.

Seeing all this insane praise for Top Gun: Maverick and the achievement it’s made in being a visually spectacular experience that dramatically improves in every way on a corny and dated 80s original while at the same time making the original better in retrospect reminds me of how director Joseph Kosinski did the exact same thing in 2010 with TRON: Legacy and critics tore it apart at that time and audiences slept on it. I’m still not over that, but I’m glad Kosinski is finally getting the praise he deserves. He’s a strong and underrated filmmaker.

Preach!

Critics blasted his previous collab with Cruise and audiences slept on that too. They were both fantastic. Perhaps they're making up for past mistakes. Hope audiences do too and turn out for Maverick.

Oddly enough, even though I love Kosinski and Cruise, I couldn’t stand Oblivion. Go figure lol.

Tron legacy is one of the worst big budget blockbusters I have ever seen. So glad Kosinski has improved since then.

The screenplay written by those hacks - Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, so I'm not surprised it's awful.

I don't get the dislike for Tron: Legacy.

I thought Tron: Legacy was quite good, actually. I wish Kosinski got to direct Tron 3 and we got a direct sequel.

And Daft Punk's Legacy soundtrack is incredible!

I think the soundtrack is great and it's incredible to look at. But that's about where it stops for me because I found the script to be execrable. I felt the same about OBLIVION, so that seemed to be a theme of Kosinski's first couple of films.

They are the highlight of both films, for sure. And they are definitely great to look at. Seems like he might have gotten the script right for Maverick.

With all the talk about Kosinski's work to date, which really amounts to only three films (Top Gun being #4), for me it works out this way. I did not like Tron: Legacy at all. I liked, but didn't love Oblivion. I believe that he has shown his strongest work, so far, with Only the Brave. From my perspective, I am noticing that his work as a director has improved with each subsequent film so, given the pre-release praise that Maverick is receiving, he may be hitting his stride here and I am anticipating Maverick to be a great movie going experience.

the 97% rating on RT may also be worth considering

Kosinski was, or still is, in the running to direct a Black Hole remake. Could be awesome, although we should be perfectly clear about one bloody thing: You can't improve on John Barry's score.

Edit: Let's maybe consider that, from what I'm reading at least, Tom Cruise was pretty hands on in the making of this movie. If it had been the sole responsibility of Kosinski who knows if it had been the same glowing reviews for this movie.

Tom Crooze does this on pretty much every movie he stars in, he micromanages the thing to the nth degree so it usually turns out how it does in spite of the director, not because of them.

Bingo. They do it exactly how he wants or he'll fire them into a volcano and bring in someone else. Honestly, i'm amazed he hasn't started directing blockbusters himself.

Well he did handle ONLY THE BRAVE quite well without Tom Cruise.

Tom Cruise says he wouldn’t allow ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ to debut on streaming.

Good man. I mean, the trailers alone make this a must see on the big screen. The Cruiser loves his movie going fans.
