Default Michael Jackson: Thriller (1982) Mobile Fidelity Hybrid Stereo SACD

Amazon B0B1ZZGPKT

As part of a larger reissue campaign for the 40th anniversary of the album, Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab will release a new Hybrid Stereo SACD of Michael Jackson's Thriller (1982). The album was previously released as a Single-Layer Stereo SACD by Sony Music in 1999 (2000 in Japan) and re-issued in 2006, with all those releases now out-of-print.

MoFi will also be issuing the album on vinyl as one of their UltraDisc One-Step 180g 33RPM LP releases. Additionally, Sony Music will reissue the album on 2xCD with a bonus disc of "Thriller-era bonus material including previously unreleased demos" with the "track list to be revealed at a later date".

All formats are expected to be available on November 18th, 2022.

Got my preorder in. I haven't heard the album in decades. Being a kid in the 80's I wore a cassette tape or two of Thriller out.

Here are the order links available so far:

https://mofi.com/collections/new-rel...-thriller-sacd

https://mofi.com/collections/new-rel...one-step-33rpm

As well as the usual Music Direct links.

The SACD is also being sold on Jackson's official website store:

https://www.shopmichaeljackson.com/product/Y4CDMJ024/

Where they also have a different packshot of the SACD:

I've little doubt the MoFi will be better than that early Sony SA-CD. Interested in the demos that it appears will only be on the 2-CD package so will likely wait for that to drop in price on the used market and get it as well.

It looks like the Amazon listings are here:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B1ZZGPKT/ (SACD)

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B1LYZRY2/ (180g 33RPM Vinyl)

Acoustic Sounds has had a pre-order link up since at least last week (in the event there are others who want to support that boutique outlet over Amazon).

Looks like they're actually a few bucks cheaper for shipping to Canada too, so I will place my pre-order there.
Thanks!

I would too, if they were able to match Acoustic Sounds' shipping price.

From either vendor I know they will be meticulously packaged.

I ordered mine from Music Direct. Does that count as the source?

Dang, I probably should have checked there too...oh well. I typically default to AS for their in-house Analogue Productions jazz titles and MD for their MoFi titles.

I just checked both websites and it appears Music Direct offers the least expensive shipping.

It appears I have chosen...wisely. I also didn't realize dobyblue was in Canada.

It's going to be hard for it sound markedly better than the Thriller 25 Vinyl. It sounds glorious.

It will wipe the floor with the Tom Coyne digitally-mastered Thriller 25 vinyl.

In fact, if you can find a near minty original vinyl (mastered AAA by Bernie Grundman) it will also wipe the floor with the Thriller 25 vinyl.

My money is on the new MOFI to be the definitive stereo edition of Thriller (just wish we were about to get a new Atmos mix on Blu-ray for surroundheads like myself)

Sometimes MFSL is better, sometimes it's exactly the same. I got a Little Feat box set with newly remastered cuts from Waiting For Columbus on it and it sounded great. So I bought the MFSL CD thinking it would be even better. It was exactly the same sounding as the cuts on the box.

Fortunately we know this won't be sent to the House of Slam (Sterling, RKS notwithstanding) so if worse it turns out the same as the excellent original AAA Grundman vinyl or Sony SACD, that should work out well for folk that have neither.

Here's a look at Wanna Be Startin' Somethin', Thriller 25 (24/96, DR5) on top and Sony SACD (DSD>24/88.2, DR12) on bottom:

I know dynamic range isn't everything, but Thriller 25 is mastered too hot for me. The longer the song goes on, the more I want to turn it down. When I'm listening to the SACD, by the time the outro hits I've got it cranked.
