I really liked the look of the Shepherd alien race, and I felt that he looked kind of familiar. Eventually it clicked that the design reminded me of Space Precinct!

The moment at the start where the camera flew through the comet's tail was obviously a little nod to DS9's intro. But I SWEAR I heard the music play the first few notes of the DS9 opening fanfare too, just really subtly before stepping away from it. Was I just imagining things?
That is understandable as his race is also from Andoria, they are a blind telepathic off shoot introduced in Season 4 of Enterprise.

Episode 2 veered a little bit into Discovery’s mainstay of expressing insecurity and being unprofessional, but I am sure this won’t be a permanent state for Uhura so it’s ok. Still a lightweight episode but there were some nice moments with Spock and Chapel, and with Pike and number one. The show feels comfortable.

It was her first time in the field, who wouldn't be second guessing themselves?

Hey, didn’t La'an share, in the first episode, that her family was also horrifically killed (by Gorns)? Kind of undercuts Uhura sharing, in the second episode, that her family was also horrifically killed. Pike is going to stop asking his crew their backstories if this keeps going.

It did feel very DISCO, especially with the music as communication thing which as someone said was a hell of a lot like DISCO S4's finale. But I think the two things that set SNW apart are that there's no big over-arching 'end of the world/universe' story that keeps heaping pressure on the characters - well, apart from Pike's fate haunting him, though in one respect it means that he's basically invincible! The core crew in these shows are perpetually protected by plot armour anyway (apart from when the actor wants to leave, lol), but still.

The second thing, and one that's more important IMO, is that we have Spock as an emotional filter. You forget how crucial having that Pinocchio-like sounding board is to Trek, to have logic cut through emotions and this being current Trek means that there's going to be a lot of emotions. I mean, McCoy was as emotional as it gets but not in a touchy-feely nuTrek type way! But just as TOS Spock provided a counterpoint to McCoy's ornery nature then NWS Spock can do the same for the more modern malaise that affects this crew.

Really enjoyed the second episode.

Agree with both of Geoff’s points above. Not having a world-ending event hanging over the season is such a refreshing change at this point, and gives everything that little bit of breathing room that it needs.

I’m very pleased with the characters and the casting. I’m not a DISCO hater, and I like a lot of the cast from that show, but there’s just something that doesn’t click with me about them as an ensemble. SNW on the other hand, characters with plenty of charisma individually, and an abundance of chemistry between the group.

Looking forward to seeing where the next episode takes us!

Yeah, I loves me some DISCO (and enjoyed Picard, albeit in smaller doses) but as with Lower Decks it's good to get away from everything being so gosh-darned serious, and it means they can do things that DISCO would get absolutely pummelled for - "ugh, why are they always baring their feelings on this show?" - and get away with it.

Serialised storytelling is a narrative tool like any other but having it season after season after season after season in DISCO, to have this sense of glorious purpose haunt what must be one of the flakiest crews in all of Trekdom, is wearing just a little thin. NWS brings some old-school swagger back to contemporary Trek but as said, it can still address things that affect us here and now without feeling as preachy as other shows. That's the way to do it I guess, to preach at people but not have them realise you're doing it!

PS

Loved it that La'an had no reaction at all to the painful DNA-altering shenanigans in the first ep, so she's totally not an Augment. At all. No sir.

PPS

So they're doing a Star Wars-style ident thingy at the start of Trek shows now? Okey dokey, if you must.

They're often dealing with something every week that could destroy a planet or the ship or whatever, yep, if you don't have that then you don't have episodic Trek, but you know what's being referred to here: it's stringing it out over a whole season that ramps up the stakes and turns it into a galaxy-wide threat e.g. Klingon war in S1, control in S2, the burn in S3 and then the DMA in S4.

I really detest Discovery (especially seasons 3 & 4, the latter of which I didn't even complete), but this show looks really good so far. Really enjoying the TOS vibes (which remains my favorite Trek).

Didn't TNG have almost the exact same plot in one episode? Just without the aliens and just moralizing whether it was right to interfere with an asteroids natural course?

This episode reminded me a little bit of The Paradise Syndrome. This had a comet instead of an asteroid.

Maybe you're thinking of "For The World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky" from TOS, which The Orville ripped off wholesale in their first season (complete with nearly note-for-note Jerry Goldsmith V'Ger cues in that episode's score)?

3 for 3

Not that this episode was perfect or anything, but it was a solid "weird disease on the ship" staple ST episode.
[Show spoiler]Interesting reversal having La'an be exceptionally wary of genetic engineering since her ancestor was infamous for abusing such science.

Yeah, while the episode as a whole wasn't particularly stand out it did have some big character revelations that worked surprisingly well. Loving it all so far. I'm particularly in love with the Enterprise from a visual standpoint as we continue to see more of it.
