Although, if I had the ability to go back in time, this would not be a priority on the list of things I wish I had done.
I got the BD of s1, but maybe that was mostly due to them only having BD originally and 4K came a few weeks later... I didn't get a 4K player until 2019 but I started buying 4K sets in Dec 2017, so by the time s2 came out I just got the 4K and had to go back and get s1. Plus who needs the DVD copies? lol

Criterion hasn't done a show though have they?

Maybe all these people cancelling Netflix will make them freak out and try out discs to get money lol

Yeah pretty much a guarantee they would not put out Stranger Things, both because I’m fairly sure they haven’t done any show before, and it’s also a show that doesn’t really suit their brand. I do think we’ll see a disc release of the remaining seasons, but if we don’t get Season 3 soon, then it’ll be just as a complete series set at the end, and quite possibly only as a more expensive collector’s edition with no cheaper release.

I see we've reached the "Criterion should release Stranger Things" stage of the conversation. Cool. It really is never coming out.

Since it doesn’t seem to be surprise dropping ahead of S4, I really don’t think it’ll happen now, however since you mention it, I do think with it being a partly horror themed show that just before or during October would have some potential even if not much.

Netflix is losing subscribers, if there ever was a moment to release something exclusive and popular outside of their own streaming platform, it certainly ain’t now.

Getting 40 bucks for a single season of a 4 season show out of the millions of the titles they have is not going to cost them any subscribers. And I'd bet there's be plenty of overlap with people who have subscriptions and want the physical.

Except when you’re losing revenue from said loss of subscribers, you start opening yourself up to other avenues of making money. No one on the planet is going to say, “I’m specifically interested in a three year-old season of a Netflix show and I was prepared to subscribe to them to see it, but since they put it out on disc, no way, José! I’ll just get that instead!” (which, again, even if they did, would STILL be revenue for the company)

Regardless of whether it's going to cost them any subscribers, it certainly won't accrue them any new subscriptions.

The audience and/or interest is so miniscule it ain't even worth starting up production costs and going to print. Outside the fact that interest in physical media is diminishing, the only people interested in buying Season 3/4 are the people that bought the first two seasons (which was released years ago). So you're already catering to a small audience (physical media collectors), and an even smaller audience of those happen to own the first two already.

And yet every major and most minor studios are still in the physical media game, so gosh, it looks like there’s still profit to be had. And when your revenue numbers are plunging as precipitously as Netflix’s are in 2022, the smart business move is to swallow your pride and follow any and all money trails. Mind you, I don’t know that Netflix is smart enough to make such survival decisions, but it’s the intelligent, strategic approach and most companies get that.

What a weird comparison to make; of course they're still releasing physical media: that's the status quo for them. Warner Bros. and Disney/FOX just started their streaming services in the last two years, before that it was (P)VOD, licensing their titles or physical media.

Netflix has been a streaming giant for nearly a decade; they're practically synonymous to it. Almost no one watches a Netflix title and thinks "Well, can't wait to own that on Bluray" whereas that's more a common thought when they're walking out of the latest Marvel movie.

And of course big revenue is Netflix's main mission. But isn't it more telling that they probably looked at the sales revenue for the first two seasons and thought "Well, clearly this ain't worth it"?

But I've been wrong before, so if they do, good for you. Really. But financially, it just makes zero sense.

GIFs are such wonderful punctuation for conversations which are going nowhere.

Occam's razor: business-wise, financially-wise, if it was financially beneficial for them to do this, wouldn't they just go ahead and do it?

Like people, there are smart businesses and there are dumb ones. Smart Netflix won out in the marketplace against dumb Blockbuster, but now Netflix’s business acumen is slipping. Business history is replete with fallen titans.
