So continuing my trek through the Marvel Cinematic universe in 3D, I watched Ant-Man again:
Haven't seen Ant-Man since it came out in 2D at the theatre. Thought it was pretty entertaining and then forgot about it. I now think it's one of my favourite comedies. As a superhero movie it's ok, but as a comedy I loved everything about it. The cast was just fantastic and their chemistry just pops off the screen more than the 3d. I'd just end up listing everyone on IMDB, so a few highlights for me: it was great seeing Hayley Atwell with a young Michael Douglas (I think they did a pretty good job with the fx there); Paul Rudd's fight with Anthony Mackie's falcon was fun and exciting; didn't realize that was Anna Akana at the end of the movie before (I've seen a few of her youtube videos-neat); and just because I normally can't stand kid characters, but Abby Ryder Fortson as the daughter was as cute as a button, just adorable. And finally, I've always been a fan of Paul Rudd, but he was perfectly cast as Scott Lang. Great addition to the Marvel universe and can't wait to get my hands on the sequel when it's cheaper (it's not available in 3D in north america apparently). The 3d was pretty good, nothing as memorable as Madagascar 3, but a few fun moments like riding along on the flying ants, and that bit near the end when he goes into the quantum realm I think, so on par with Avengers AOU. I'm gonna watch this again with some friends, just as a comedy it's more group friendly. |

Finally picked up the 3D Blu of this and watched it last night, first time since my 2D theatrical viewing. I quite liked the film before, but it plays so much better in 3D! A very nice conversion, especially during the fantastic shrunken sequences and even moreso in the quantum realm. Excellent job, and a very entertaining film, and only minimal Avengers references which suits me just fine. I think I’ll have to pick up the sequel in 3D too.

Though it's not as strong as I was getting the impression that it would be, perhaps the first Ant Man is stronger? It would be a fun comparison. I'd give the edge to the first film, as Scott Lang was competent in it, he becomes a bit of a doofus so that the Pyms can have an excuse to info-dump for us. It works, but it undermines Ant Man 1 making a point of him being an exceptional electrical engineer. |

3D does work better with a taller AR. Even with a "scope" screen, the field of view becomes too narrow for some films as they have the black bars "cut off" objects that popout and gimp it (eg: mad max's steering wheel) 16:9 each time, every time, I say. Or shoot within the limits of 'scope. |

For me 1:78 or 1:85 to 1 is preferred. I mean James Cameron used 1:85 for the home video versions of AVATAR & TITANIC. THE AVENGERS & ANT-MAN in 1:78 make for a fully immersive home viewing experience than 2:35 to 1. Even the Marvel titles with variable aspect ratio pull me in more than the scope image which works better in a theatrical setting. I can only speak for myself in that animated titles in scope take me out of any enjoyment I have in the project.

If it is projected (VR or physically) then I can deal with Scope at home, so long as the film does not have the black bars gimping the 3D effect. It's too bad that anamorphic lenses to properly project scope films at home are so expensive, though it is kind of amusing that projectors that cost a tenth or less than one of those lenses have support for them ![]() |

I've been enjoying Scope films since they were introduced into the theatres with "The Robe" in early 1954. I was 10. Now that sets are large enough one can avoid the dreaded "pan and scan" prints of misguided cable channels like AMC (which used to be called "American Movie Classics.") Hah! |

There was an evolution on the tech and an improvement on the experience of the specialists. Even that i'd give 1st Ant Man an advantage as it is all widescreen as in Ant Man and the Wasp that ratio is made just on Imax footage to create more impact on the 2.35:1 AR.

I completely agree that 3D is better not in scope. Even on a large screen, a 16:9 image or close to it fills your vision much more widely. I think with a regular 2D movie it’s easier for your brain to disregard everything outside the black boxes, but 3D movies literally rely on tricking your brain into seeing stereo, and that illusion is tampered with when you have flat black 2D space with no depth cues visibly around it.
It’s the exact same reason why nobody is making a VR headset with scope views for each eye. It would be completely discombobulating. I’m not saying 3D in scope is as intolerable as that would be, but for me at least it definitely affects the ability to get lost in the image and truly feel like you are there. |

So, essentially, any movie can be watched at home in 16:9 if that's what floats your boat ![]() |

I think a 3D movie is better in the home when it is full screen. When I watch 2D movies I prefer it widescreen but I feel more immersed in a 3D movie when it's fullscreen.
That's why the decision to no longer have IMAX scenes in 3D blu-ray by Disney is so disappointing. |

Shit, I’ll take 3D Blus in scope all day long, as long as I get the 3D Blus.
