Teen idols Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello returned to the big screen for a new surf-and-sand adventure with the hip, hilarious 80s update BACK TO THE BEACH, which was originally released on August 7, 1987. To celebrate the film’s 35th anniversary, the delightful romp will arrive on Blu-ray for the first time as part of the Paramount Presents line on August 9, 2022 from Paramount Home Entertainment.

Newly remastered from a new 4K scan of the original film elements, BACK TO THE BEACH is a fan-favorite cult classic that lovingly parodies the quintessential 60s “beach party” films. Frankie and Annette, having grown up and put aside their beach-partying lifestyle, visit their daughter in Southern California and discover there's still some wild times left in them. Along for the fun in the California sun are a host of familiar faces: Connie Stevens, Dick Dale, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Don Adams, Bob Denver, Jerry Mathers, Barbara Billingsley, Edd “Kookie” Byrnes, and Pee-Wee Herman.

The Paramount Presents Blu-ray of BACK TO THE BEACH includes a brand-new Filmmaker Focus with director Lyndall Hobbs featuring never-before-seen home movies from the set, as well as access to a digital copy of the film. The Blu-ray is presented in collectible packaging featuring a foldout image of the film’s theatrical poster and an interior spread with key movie moments.

I mentioned in another thread, but I think in some cases, it's very likely the person running the Presents line is also adding some of his favorites to it. I believe he's a big Burt Reynolds fan, and hence we're getting Rough Cut too. Back to the Beach looks like a fun and silly 80's Summer title, so I'm sure it'll sell decently for Paramount.

Sad that we get this before the remaining 60s Beach Party films. Who knows what’s going on with Olive these days and Kino apparently have a hate on for them even though they’d sell better than half the shit they release (Table for Five still available for $5 folks, get ‘em while they’re hot) so hopefully somebody picks them up.

I’m also baffled that this is part of the Presents line but it is a fun little movie that doesn’t take itself seriously at all and is definitely true to the spirit of the originals.

The only thing I love better than a 60s beach movie is an 80s beach movie, so this seems like the best of both worlds as far as I’m concerned. Never seen it, but will happily give it a blind buy!

I don't think this movie had an existing HD master so that probably played a part and someone at Paramount might be a big fan of the movie too.

With the end of Olive seemingly near because their titles are going OOP, we are at the mercy of Kino who don't seem too fond of the beach party movies. There really isn't another label that would release them. We know from streaming that HD masters do exist for at least some of the ones not released on blu-ray: Bikini Beach, Pajama Party, and Ski Party. I also think Sergeant Deadhead has a HD master (the MOD DVD looks like it was sourced from a HD master and is full 2.35:1 while the streaming version uses an ancient full screen transfer).

Maybe the release of Back To The Beach will motivate Kino to release the beach party movies but I'm not getting my hopes up.

My Blu Ray holy grail, a good day.

In the days before the mainstream internet, I lost my VHS copy of this, and went years thinking I was crazy that Pee-wee was actually in this, when I finally snagged another tape down the line my memory was restored. This movie has a ton of other cameos in it, if you ever surfed or lived at the beach this is a must watch. Also North Shore uses some of the same stock surfing footage in this, pretty funny considering Hawaii surf looks nothing like California!
