Default Leon The Professional to have both versions, forced subtitles?

If I understand correctly, the forthcoming French release of Leon will have both the cut version of the film and the long version, but the long version will have forced French subtitles. Is this true? What is it with the French and forced subtitles on "original versions" of English language films? Is it a law in France that obliges them to do that? It might be better to buy the just announced UK BD release...

There won't be any forced subs on this one.
Some French editions only offer French subs because the companies which release them only have the rights to release them in France so there is a competition issue. But I can't see why the subs are sometimes forced, like they are on TF1 video blu-rays.

PS: it pisses me off too, as I'm French and always watch my movies with Engish tracks and sometimes English subs. That's why I never bought a TF1 Video release or some of the Canalplus relases with only French subs. I usually import these titles.

Damn, I'm so tempted, but the $42US is holding me back, knowing there will eventually be a U.S. release with at least better audio specs.

I am fairly certain it will be Region-locked.

The cut version is the theater version here in the USA correct? Also, what does the uncut version have that makes it different?

Thanks for the review pro-bassoonist! I am curious about the color tone. The dvdbeaver reviewer http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDReviews7/leon.htm felt that the yellow was too prominant and incorrect. I noticed that you did not feel this way. Do you disagree with this comment? Do you think the any future US release will be this identical master or do you think a US release might have superior Video?

Thanks for your help, I am on the fence about importing this, if this is as good as any future US release will be I am going to order it.

Hello,

We have provided 20 different captures with the review and if you look at all of them - taken from different parts of the film - this excessive green tint Gary is concerned with definitely does not appear to be an issue. A perfect example is the capture showing Mr. Reno showering; I think that the color-balance is very convincing.

This being said, I would think that an eventual SONY release will prove to be better than the French disc (there are a few specks and a bit of noise that are noticeable on the French release, which I am going to assume SONY will address). However, I am unsure when and if such a US release will become a reality. For the record, the upcoming UK release, which I believe will be Region-Locked given that it will arrive via Optimum, will more than likely be a port of the Kinowelt German release, which is, as noted in our review, practically identical to the French one.

All in all, it comes down to how much you like the film -- both the German and French BD releases are substantial upgrades over previous DVD releases of Leon. Only the French disc, however, is Region-Free.

Finally, while I have a great deal of respect for Gary and his work, his review and analysis reveal plenty of errors - the French disc is produced by Gaumont, not Paramount. As noted in our review, the English audio track is also encoded as a DTS-HD HR 5.1 mix, not DTS-HD Master Audio as Gary's review claims, etc.

Pro-B

Just received my copy from amazon.fr only took 2 days to deliver

However the subtitle information on the review is wrong, there are no English subtitles for either version of the film, part of the reason why i bought this version and not wait for the Uk version in october was because the review said it had English subtitles.

It would be Region-B "locked" and using the same elements used for the French and German releases.
