Default PS3 problems

So this is not a new issue to this system but my father has now had his 3rd red light special as I like to call it on his PS3. He only plays games on it and has never watched a movie he says dvd is all he needs LOL. This is his 3rd PS3 that has flaked out on him he is pissed and wants to dump it in the river now. His 360 has died on him one time and that was replaced. But his PS3 in less than 8 months has now failed 3 times what is up with these things? I am glad I didn't pick one up when he got his. It seems to try to boot up then just goes silent and the light goes red and flashes. Has anyone else had this happen yet?

No, but while I've been enjoying my PS3 for the last several months, my son is now on his 3rd 360 (his last one died from RROD just this past weekend).

You categorization of "what is up with these things" is way off. It is widely documented that the 360 is extremely defective (~33%) while the defect rate on PS3 is almost nil. Maybe your dad has a bum machine... I don't know. If he has had 3 different units fail, I'd say the problem lies with him, because that is not typical of the unit's performance.

I'm almost tempted to ask if he is pushing the button on the front right after turning on the power. It's kind of like the bootup button, otherwise the power will be on but the light will be red.

I would be curious on how your dad has both the 360 and PS3 situated. Could be a heat issue which both boxes can be made to die (ring of death for 360 and just total death for the PS3)?

I'm on my 3rd PS3 myself, 1st one on launch wouldn't accept discs and the replacement just died about a month ago. Just contact Sony support should be still under warranty...

If you're on a 3rd obviously it's not being taken care of properly. I'm on my 2nd but there was something wrong with that one from the day I got it. If everyone was having a problem that's a different story but only a small percentage of ps3's have defects

Walmart on launch day...was DOA on opening the box. Got a replacement from Sony in 3 days and has worked fine till about month ago and it boot for about 5-10 seconds and stop, black screen, nothing... Still under warranty so again another replacement from Sony and "knock on wood" so far working like normal.
