just watched cocteau's beauty and the beast. magical film. definitely see how ridley scott would've been inspired by it for legend.
any other fairytale like films on criterion? donkey skin is another i can think of, but stuff similar to that would be cool

Yep. PS3 is epic, with Michelle Yeoh matching Jackie Chan stunt for stunt.

The biggest issue with the digipaks is the opening being on the wrong side.

As we get closer and closer to their November line up, I'm really curious what big titles they might be saving. I'm thinking we'll be getting a boxset of some sort, but from which director? Maybe another Scorsese title? A man can dream, but I really hope a Akira Kurosawa boxset isn't too far out.

The wait for Kurosawa has become so absurd. A boxset has got to be in the making no?

Yeah, it's quite insane. The fact that we haven't gotten a Kurosawa title since 2017 just seems doesn't seem real. Still, I wouldn't be surprised if one is in the works, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's still even more years away.

I'm trying to think what's loosely confirmed at this point to be coming in the future. Clearly at some point we're getting Lost Highway and Inland Empire, maybe a Lynch 4K set isn't out of the question since all of his films that are available to Criterion have 4K masters (I'm sure people would be not happy about double or triple dipping some titles, but it's just a thought). Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid seems nearly confirmed to be with Criterion (although could always be 2023 since it's the 50th anniversary). Demonlover has to be coming at some point too. Also it's been a few years now but didn't Deakins confirm Criterion has the Coens The Man Who Wasn't There? But as far as a big November release, who knows. Maybe some more A24 stuff (fingers crossed). But I'm with you, Kurosawa would be lovely.

Nice post. Yeah, it makes sense to release Pat Garrett in 2023 for the 50th, but again, Criterion does its own thing. The sooner the better for sure.

I remember a rumor that Criterion was going to release The Heroic Trio. Is this still a rumor, or has anything been confirmed?

Technically a rumor until it’s officially announced, but this one has strong roots.

Johnnie To's 'The Heroic Trio' (1993) - Coming Soon from Criterion Collection

Man… I hope Xiao Wu could get a stand-alone release, but my gut tells me it would just be a part of a World Cinema box set like Taipei Story was.

The last 5 years have been characterized by a growing appreciation that much has been overlooked within the traditional wisdoms. Yes Kurosawa deserves a boxset but he has rightly slipped down the pecking order so some historical wrongs can be righted. It probably is true that Criterion are being a bit too 'correct' but that does happen when the pendulum swings.

I find it annoying that the digipak trays are now apparently randomly glued to the cardboard case rightside up or upside down. Box set: some rightside up, some upside down. Single discs, ditto. Q: How hard can it be to put all the trays consistently in the way they're supposed to go? A: Must be pretty tough. (And yes cardboard sux too.)

I wish Criterion could snag Bulworth from Disney. That film deserves more love.
