And his insubordination is not portrayed positively early in the movie, he would've been grounded if not for Iceman, but the point is that Maverick was the best shot they had to complete the trench run due to his experience.

Looking at the poll, the VAST majority loves the movie, so you're likely not going to change anyone's minds.

“My dad was an Air Force fighter pilot and I thought it would be fun to take my kids and parents to see “Top Gun: Maverick” this weekend. My hope was that the kids would get to see what it was like for their grandpa to fly.

A couple take aways.

First, this movie was just fun. And family fun at that. There was very little bad language, no gruesome deaths with blood, and no gratuitous sex scenes. Bravo to the filmmakers in remembering that you can make a movie fun without all of that.

Second, hallelujah that someone made a big screen blockbuster that wasn’t a Marvel film. Sure, it’s a sequel and I get that will be part of the discussion, but you can’t help but enjoy that you aren’t watching super heroes doing super hero things. And I love Marvel films, so this isn’t a dig at them, just refreshing to have something else and knowing that audiences will respond.

Third, this movie is MADE for the big screen. Tom Cruise has the big screen experience figured out. The actors trained to be in the planes (check out that featurette if you haven’t) and everything just feels real. And because of that, it made me feel different when watching the movie. There are real stakes. A coworker mentioned that his wife’s watch sent a notification that her heart rate was up when watching the movie. I am not surprised by that. It’s hard not to get anxious watching this movie.

Lastly, and probably the most important to me, my parents haven’t been to a movie theater in maybe 15 years. My dad even said “boy, that brought me back to my flying days”. He and the kids talked for hours afterwards about his flying career. Movies, in movie theaters, really can be cultural events. More than movies at home. I know for sure that experience we all had this weekend was different than if we had seen that movie at home. You make the right movie, and you can even get them to the theater.

And last… My dad graduated USAF Weapons School, the Air Force equivalent to Top Gun. So yeah, he was bad ass.”

This morning, after celebrating last night, I called my old fighter pilot friend from Maryland - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...d#post19219068 and he concurs with Jason’s assessment.

Lately I've been rating movies based on how much I'm thinking about them after I've seen them. That doesn't happen much anymore, but I'm still thinking about this one 3 days later. Definitely going to see it again.

Hey buddy!

I'm on viewing #3 myself. Two DolbyCinemas and one Regal 4DX. Think I'll make my 4th an IMAX.

Sup dude!

Nice! I'm definitely going IMAX next time around. I otherwise live too far from a Dolby Cinema... although this one would be worth it for the experience, we'll see.

BTW, remember when you helped me early on in my 4k UHD journey? I just recently replaced those ol' KS8000s with LG C1 OLEDs 3 weeks ago. I've been like this ever since.

Got to see Top Gun: Maverick in the local movie theatre this evening CET and all I can say is, this movie kicked ass! Best aerial combat scenes I ever saw in any movie, felt real (not green screen 'fakery'), a thrilling and enjoyable ride! Might go and see it a second time and will definitely pick it up on 4K BD for my collection. What great fun!

I’m actually hoping that like with the ‘Top Gun House’ from the original movie, now eventually having made local news - https://abc7.com/top-gun-house-ocean...20Tara%20Lazar, that the Hard Deck bar will be reconstructed (which it could easily be, as best to my knowledge, although deconstructed, it’s still in storage rather than outright discarded to a dump) either built up again on base at naval station north island or better yet, somewhere in the San Diego area to likewise serve as a testament this time to the sequel.
Regarding testaments ^ and polls –

Looking ahead, starting in 2032 submit your Top Gun: Maverick nominations for induction here - https://www.loc.gov/programs/nationa...stry/nominate/

So as to join Top Gun - https://www.loc.gov/programs/nationa...istry-listing/ .

If these other movies can achieve that status of being inducted as soon as they qualify – https://www.imdb.com/poll/iAaljEDeDhw/ , don’t you think that Top Gun: Maverick merits that same consideration? If memory serves, none of those titles listed in the imdb poll exceeds or matches the current Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 99% for TG: M - https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/top_gun_maverick.

Granted over time, that % will likely slip because of the nature of some to embrace simply being contrarian, but I figure it won’t slip out of the 90’s, plus, as my wife remind me, consider the significant fact that for ALL those other movies (from Raging Bull to 13 Lakes), people did not have to contend with SARS-CoV-2, nor have to consider the worst case scenario of picking up said virus at an indoor theater because of choosing to see a movie on the BIG screen and then if they qualify for/and have access to Paxlovid, or a 3-day infusion of Remdesivir or a quick shot of Bebtelovimab - https://covid-19-therapeutics-locato...ub.arcgis.com/

So come 2032, I think it could easily be deemed that Top Gun: Maverick is “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”. Hoping TG: M is elected into the Film national hall of fame on the first ballot like with those other movies.

That's good to hear, thanks.
Would you say 50% of the movie took place in the Jets in the sky?

This movie was incredible. I don't know why but after watching the sailing scene I just felt so happy. The scenes in the cockpits were so intense. I thought the music that opened the movie was kind of weird at first. Easy 5/5. Best movie of the year so far for me.

I saw that too ...

"With rave reviews, an A+ Cinemascore grade and a jaw-dropping $160.5 million four-day domestic gross and $300 million worldwide as of yesterday, Skydance and Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick is messing up everyone’s summer movie betting pool and making me look quite stupid." - Scott Mendelson / Forbes Staff

You're welcome.
For the production, there were well over a hundred flights involving the two F/A –18F jets, one pictured here - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...d#post16779683

Honestly, I'd forgotten movies could be made like this.

Each musical cue was an operatic emotional statement. Each line of dialogue was an offering to Zeus, some timeless message carried out through the ages. Each shot a tribute to the Titans, honoring the mythos of Tartarus.

The enemy is a mask, a silent menace, a blank slate (they have no presence except to exist as capital C conflict, and when they perish, it's as if they were never anything but fire and smoke to begin with). Each action sequence tailor-made for any future possibility of a roller coaster or indoor 3D dark ride simulator (seriously, just try the D-Box or 4DX); the most thrilling trench run since the 1970s!

Not a single trace of reality, not a shred of credibility, not a tinge of objectivity in how it treats Maverick or the other characters or the story.

It is a perfect blockbuster. I hadn't experienced the '90s this hard while acknowledging the 2020s of it all until the Lady Gaga song began playing after segueing seamlessly from the love theme instrumental as the two love interests look longingly at each other while bathed in the light of Apollo.

Hahahaha. I was skeptical, and earnestly believed Cruise and his Scientology posse just mind-controlled everyone to praise the film, but no, this thing f*cks.

What a Colossus of a time at the movies.

P.S. This has 2 Oscars already in hand, minimum. And kudos to the team for coming down to Earth for the
[Show spoiler]Ice and Maverick scene in Ice's study, a truly lovely grace note for the character and Kilmer
.

The sequel is better in some ways than the original, but I still give the first film a slight edge. It is iconic and infinitely quotable. Remains to be seen if this one will inspire a new generation of aviators.

The original was/is still pretty awesome. I've been tempted to reinstall it. I just got a PS5 and I wouldn't mind seeing how it looks/plays on it.

Thanks bud. Hope all is well on your end as well.
