What an action movie this is. The cockpit camera angle is so beautiful and unique. One of the wildest experiences I've had at the movies.

Only things I didn't care for,
[Show spoiler]was the weirdness of having the old 60 year old pilot be shoehorned in for the mission rather than putting the trust in the students to do the job.

Also, this movie pandered to middle-aged and old conservative white men so much.

The old white guy can still do the job better than the young pilots (the female, and other minority pilots).

The old white guy can neglect the women who loved him many times, and at the end he not only gets her back, she comes chasing and driving up to him in a classic car.

The old white guy saves the day for everyone.

It's so cringey.
White this, white that, conservative this, minority that. Just enjoy a good movie when you see it man.

Is this movie drawing because of Tom Cruise? Or is it that audiences are hungry to watch something and have a movie experience other than a comic book movie? This movie is truly a spectacle. There hasn't been a top gun movie in over 30 years though. So it's not like Mission Impossible where fans know what to expect every sequel.
Maybe movie goers are hungry for a summer blockbuster movie experience that is nostalgic but not overly so, apolitical, emotional in a positive way that hits the right strings, and leaves them feeling good when they exit the theater. Those have been few and far between in recent years.

So many things.

This movie is a straightforward blockbuster flick, I mean, no political, woke or any "new millennium" speech about all the disney/netflix agenda for example. The action is real, feels real and the cgi used is to enhance the real thing. The actors are on real locations, no green screen bullshit or that new 3D "projector" sets like those used on disney that makes everything look so generic and fake. The musical cues on the scenes gives this movie personality, the action is top notch like anything we have seen before and the sound is amazing....

On top of all that a great script, amazing acting all around and no "inclusive random character" stealing the show.

And yeah.... Tom Cruise.

This movie is what cinema used to be... I hope hollywood takes notes about the boxoffice success and re-take this path on future projects.

This is the equivalent of complaining that a Superman movie features a white guy with super powers saving the day. That's the entire bloody point of the exercise. Top Gun is about a talented pilot named Maverick, that's the protagonist, that's who the audience is paying to see. Of course he's going to be placed front and centre, and the reason why so many of these 80s sequels come out and tank is becaus too many people in Hollywood don't seem to understand that. They just give these properties the "diversity scan" and identify all the problematic elements that need fixing, and then bleed all the character and soul from the movie in the desperation to appeal to the progressive modern day younger audience, and while that audience is cetrtainly more aware, sensitive, and considerate than the audiences of yesteryear, the dirty little secret about them is that sometimes they actually do want to just watch a sequel about a dumb old white guy saving the day.

To me, this movie is all about second chances, and that you're never too old to prove yourself. As someone who's nearing the dreaded 50-year milestone in July, that message resonates.

I wanted to go 3.5 on the ol' rating, but rounded up to a 4. This is the kind of movie my dad would've loved to pick apart since he was an F4 RIO and trained at Miramar (said it's mostly classroom) while my mom would've just loved it, period...easy to follow, not-complicated. Me? Thought it was good and did what it was trying to do. Nothing more, nothing less. It really makes people happy, if last night's screening is any indication, and maybe those "feelin' good is good enough" movies are in shorter supply these days. Maybe that's gonna change.

I personally don’t see the point in that besides that’s just the way it’s almost always been done. It’s not like it’s a documentary about MJK Jr or something. If other cultures create famous characters in their own image, who really cares if it’s done in the states. Do you really demand every iteration from here to kingdom come look identical? “Are you not entertained??”

Beautiful. So happy it’s a box office success. I’ve preordered it on 4K UHD. I love it.

Ukraine Top Gun #2 / Hypersonic cash register

DEADLINE

"SATURDAY UPDATE: Paramount/Skydance’s Top Gun: Maverick is quite simply on a hypersonic tear. Tom Cruise is not only outdoing himself at domestic turnstiles, but continues to fly higher at the international box office. Friday’s number in 64 overseas markets was $19.6M, a drop of just 21% versus last Friday in the holdovers. The running offshore cume through Friday is $204.3M — this means that $500M global is clearly within sights through Sunday.

Let’s first recall that TG:M is not yet out in Korea which is a huge Cruise market; it goes there June 23 after a visit from the team."

_____

Half $Billion by Sunday (half way point from the hypersonic silver bullit).

China is not even in the picture. What sez you; $1billion worldwide obtainable?
_____

* The original 'Top Gun' (1986):
Budget: $15 million
Box office: $357.3 million

That was impressive ^ back then for a budget of $15 million.
That's 24 times in gross revenues its cost.
It's nice to be alive in the movie business.

I wanted to exclaim, "P-51! Cadillac of the Sky!" in the closing shot, thanks to Spielberg's Empire of the Sun. I somehow restrained myself.

Late to the thread, was pretty sure I commented on it during its 14 year life tho (wow lol)

Movie was fantastic, better than the first imo, and I grew up watching the first

Saw it in IMAX, wish we had a 4DX theatre here to experience it in that (I imagine it's amazing for top gun)

Will be watching it again in Screen X, seems like it would be even more immersive!

I appreciate that they brought the original patches on the jacket back. I didn't hear about China pulling out, but glad they did since it allowed for Japan and Taiwan to return to the jacket.

There was some cheesiness/silliness with the sceipt/storyline but none of that mattered because the movie was just so epic overall

The mission impossible trailer was a bonus too

Wether you're a fan of the original, or you've never seen it, you'll love this

5/5 just an absolute epic fun family friendly movie

Tried going through the thread, it's interesting to see how it progressed over all these years!

Not really my point, but I guess if they had decided to make Maverick a black guy and demonstrate that the character has gone from white to black in the 30+ years since we last saw him then it would probably not be the best look for the progressive movement!
