Viy has solid literary source material and is also a remake of an older film (also very good) so is a much better film.

I dont think many have noticed but Viy 3D is a re-interpretation of older Viy movie. The magic scenes of older Viy are revealed to be trickery, false tales, dreams and hallucinations in new Viy. Except for a throwaway scene at the end, Viy 3D is more of a mystery movie rather than a supernatural tale.
If anyone is planning to view Viy 3D, I strongly suggest that older Viy be seen first to get the context.
