I won't be pre-ordering this one much as I like the movie. I'll wait for the horror stories first before making my mind up.

Ironically enough, the lengthy second and third Pirates movies weren’t DNR’ed and seem fine on double-decker UHD discs, even with a bunch of extra language tracks. But I do wonder whether the lack of any high frequency >2K information is what helps with those, as actual 4K finishes around 2 1/2 hours long can struggle on a UHD66 e.g. The Last Jedi.

Here's to hoping, the outcome will be pleasing and a significant upgrade over the blus!

As for the Pirates series:
Very much like with the Highlander and The Matrix movies, I only care for the first outing, respectively!
There can be only one (apparently for Highlander they knew from the very beginning that the sequels would be subpar)!

Good for Disney for not falling for the populist decision and giving the consumer a reliable technology, I wish other studios would have done that.
Some people have had chronic issues with Disnee’s UHD66 discs as well, too many to list. So: nah bruv. Don’t laud their cheapness as a virtue. Has it visibly impacted the work they’ve done so far? Also no, though the Last Jedi is a bit iffy.

But Heat will be the first “true 4K“ transfer of this length that Disnee have put on a double decker so it’ll be an interesting test for them. Or they might surprise us all and put it on a UHD100

Disney know how to encode, bar the three action scenes this won't need to be crazy bitrate town.

They were able to cram Endgame on a 66 disc and that looked quite decent!

Which is not the sharpest, clean digital production. Nothing impressive, to be honest.

It being not sharp and clean means it's harder to encode....

The end fight, with dust, sparks, powers, smoke and 600+ people in it is an insane thing to encode full stop.
That it isn't a Paramount/Studio Canal lego mess is a testament to Disney

I don't see how Endgame's BD-66 can be used to judge anything relating to Heat's potential encode. One's as smooth as a baby's ass, the other was shot of film in 1995. Apples and bowling balls.

They could well get that sucker onto a 66, and even do it well. But, dayum, they're gonna have to work some magic.

Disney explaining to us as Waingro did. I had to do it, man. I had to put it on a BD-66

And Endgame isn’t wall to wall action either, there’s lots of talky bits where they can dial down the bitrate then crank it up for the action. Much like Heat, then. But with something shot on film with all that inherent randomness of one frame to the next requires a FAR keener approach to the compression and this thing could fall apart with an average video bitrate of, say, 35 Mb/s.

That said, it’s never been a particularly grainy film so that’ll work in its favour, as will the lack of anything approaching HDR brightness as it’s brightness that really messes with the encoders, especially on HDR10 layers of Dobly FEL encodes - but Heat won’t have worry about Dobly!

Heat isn't grainy at all, it's the same stock as Batman Forever and we all know that looks just like Predator...
And Endgame smooth? Lol

So when this comes out and if it's on a BD 66, and has no encoding issues will this spec BS be dropped?

Is it s foregone conclusion that this will replace the current digital UHD stream on Movie Anywhere and other retailers?
