one thing you have to remember about consoles is they have very limited amounts of memory. the PS3 only has 256MB of video ram and this is a very very limiting issue for high rez textures needed for games to look even ok at full 1080p. i feel that this is the main reason that we will see very few true 1080p games with any real depth. the ps3 really does have quite a bit of cpu power but the limited amount of memory is going to be the main factor as we move along.

With a fixed hardware spec including standard HDD and an efficient streaming engine like Uncharted's you can pull off plenty with the 256-512MB of memory available.

Agreed.

Sony said Factor 5 had the best understanding of how to use the PS3. Factor 5 believed they were only close to around 50% of it's power while streaming to both pools of memory. Lair was 1600x1080p. The dragon with rider was 150K polys. A level was 134 million polys. They had a couple thousand soldiers and hundreds of dragons with A.I. They had fluid dynamics going as well as discrete 7.1 LPCM audio (all within two pools of 256MB of RAM). Back then much LESS RAM was actually available to the developers (like around 40MB less than now).

Yep. That 512MB total RAM is enough for a LOT of things WITH a good streaming engine in place.

The PS3 has 2 types of memory, including 256Mb of very high speed mem, but overall it has literally just as much memory as the 360 (512Mb - print of the OS), just very differently managed.

Okay, maybe not months ago but it's already been brought up. Clicky.

But doesn't Crysis look unbelievable in Very High? Watch it from 0:25 in HD. It still completely blows me away.

My laptop almost had a heart attack trying to play that video.

IMO though the PS3 version looks better than the 360 version. Killzone 2 didn't have to render as much colors or draw distance.

Yeah, but I still can't believe that the CryEngine 3 looks suckish compared to the CryEngine 2, due to the engine built for the consoles. I personally think that they should do more work on it, pronto.

Hope this link works, this guy is awesome. I watch him weekly. He is relentless on ripping on the 360. This came to mind when I saw this thread.

Wow. After watching that video, I thought to myself 'Is he actually spreading the word, or is he just a homeless attention-loving idiot.' Either way, I didn't get it.

guess i should have searched better but i'm sure i'll be forgiven

On the case of the memory i concur with Shin-Ra & the 256mb operates at rare high speed of 3.2ghz from what i read which should compensate for the difference in size
