I believe the PS5 lacks the hardware to even be able to read a CD. Likely a cost saving since they know less than 5% (if even that) of people will use a CD on their system.

I've always been confused about this. I've heard what you're saying Diesel but I've also heard that the hardware capability in the PS4/PS5 Blu-Ray drives has always been there to read CD-ROMS but in order to do so, Sony has to pay some kind of licensing fee for every console sold to be used in that way. Evidently Sony just chooses not to pay it and has the capability disabled, via firmware. However a simple firmware update could technically enable the drive to read CD-ROMS if Sony chose to do so.

They’d rather promote Spotify.

Is that the reason why we don’t have Dolby Atmos in game as well? Sony invested in their proprietary Pulse 3D to dodge paying a Dolby license?

Probably. Though MS has some sort of exclusivity deal with Dolby for use of Vision/Atmos, its kind of a "chicken or egg" situation. Did MS get exclusivity by default because Sony refused to pay the license or did Sony develop Pulse 3D because of MS' exclusivity?

I'm sure MS didn't get exclusivity and with Vision it's just for games so it's weird. Dolby is just the bastard in the format wars. I remember when I got my One X, I paid a fee to unlock Atmos in the Dolby app to unlock Atmos.

There ain’t any exclusivity with Dolby Vision/Atmos.

If the hardware manufacturer can support it, they have an option to pay Dolby a license fee.

In this case Sony said.. nah we’re good thanks.

As for MS, Atmos is capable but ya indeed have to pay a 1-time license fee. Wether it’s worth $15 to you really depends on your HT gear.

I’ll tell ya this, Atmos with the Xbox Wireless Headset is sweet especially when watching films on Disney + or Netflix.

No, Im certain an article came out back before this gen started, saying that MS had some kind of exclusivity deal with Dolby for Vision/Atmos. Maybe that was just for games and not movies. That being the case, why TF would Sony agree to pay Dolby for licensing just for movie playback but not be allowed to use it for games? I wouldnt pay it either.

The DV/A deal with Ms I believe was a timed thing. But it’s neither here nor there. There’s only a handful of games that even use it.

The PS plus launched today here. Ł38.22 to upgrade my essential plane.

Sony are adding the NTSC options for the PAL games too so that’s a bonus.

I feel like the whole tiers thing is overcomplicated for the average consumer. If you can't understand what's on offer at a glance, then your service needs work.

Sony should have just put up as many current and legacy titles with the choice of NTSC or PAL for purchase, like normal, categorised under platform/genre and just stuck with one PS+ that has it's own benefits instead of conflating everything.

It’s a mess.

Looking at “new” games from PSN on my PS5 shows a row of games that are part of the sub. Think I saw the new Sonic game in there...barely.

I have a friend who heard about the new subscription model games list and when he looked into it for about 10 minutes and saw how much he had to look into to know what he was getting for what price and what tier he decided its not worth it and moved on; so this is definitely accurate I’d say.

They should just cancel the monthly games, they've been mostly worthless anyways

Tier 1: Ps Plus Essential/Online/Basic, etc..
includes: Online multiplayer, cloud storage, store discounts

Tier 2: Ps Plus Premium
includes: Ps Plus Essentia + extra games a la gamepass

Tier 3: Ps Plus Complete
includes: Ps Plus Premium + Streaming games

the "free" games shouldn't' been separated between 3 tiers. just make each tier offer something extra, not different list of games

if you only want to play online, get tier 1. you want extra games? tier 2. you want to stream ps3 games? tier 3 is for you

Microsoft doesn’t have any deal for Dolby Vision or the Series X would support Dolby Vision.

Man that really doesn't surprise me, lol. I can see them streamlining the service back to one tier in a few years. Less is more.

So this extra tier works the same as regular PS+ in the sense I add the offered games to my library and can download at any time?

Someone better make an Excel spreadsheet to break down all that's on offer cohesively...

You're right. I read up on this some more yesterday. Turns out there WAS an article published back before the start of this gen, saying that MS had exclusivity to Dolby Atmos/Vision but that was since debunked. I missed the debunking part of it I guess. So I guess it just boils down to Sony not wanting to pay the licensing to use it. Wow, Sony can be such a strange company! They'll spend like a drunken Arab prince in Las Vegas at times and then choose the weirdest things to be frugal about at other times. First the license to use CD-Rom, now this. Weird!
