Masterpiece: Noun

1. An outstanding work of art or craft.
2. The greatest work, as of an artist. Also called masterwork.
3. Something superlative of its kind: a masterpiece of political ingenuity.

Now, why can't a film be called a "Masterpiece?"

I love Do the Right Thing, but 25th Hour is, IMO, Mr. Lee's best film. Followed by Do the Right Thing and then She's Gotta Have It.

Don't you sound silly.

I guess that's why AFI decided to include it in it's top 100 movies of all time and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry, one of five films to do so in its first year of eligibility.

umm, are you serious?! I don't think anyone here needed you to post the definition of "masterpiece." I said it shouldn't be thrown around when talking about film. Very few films should be called "masterpiece" and IMO none were ever directed by Spike Lee. If you just throw the word masterpiece around you devalue its meaning.

They did that because they think it is a great , one of a kind movie. You don't make list's like that unless you made something truly special.

I was looking at your movies and you call "There Will Be Blood" a masterpiece. I completely agree with that statement, so some of the irony is lost now. Oh well, just don't make it a habit.
You also say you haven't watched the Matrix yet because of all the hype it received. I'm confused by those type statements, since you must've bought it for some reason or another. You also say you bought the Harry Potter boxset just to bump up your collection number. What's going on in your mind?

1- TWBB IS a masterpiece (and I don't throw that term around lightly)
2- Matrix was purchased with the intent to watch it but it keeps making its way to the bottom of my list partly because I know it will not live up to my expectations at this point.
3-Not sure what you are talking about with the Harry Potter Boxset?

I think many people are so quick to jump on the 'Do the Right Thing' bandwagon because of something they heard or read in the past. I'm not going to tell you what you can and can't call a "masterpiece" but I do think if you are referring to ANY Spike Lee Joint as a masterpiece then you are taking the word too lightly. I mean, masterpiece? Seriously?

BTW, this is EXACTLY the kind of post I like to read. You are clearly an intelligent person and not just interested in throwing out blanket statements for the simple purpose of posting. I appreciate any dialogue and certainly any well thought argument when it comes to discussing movies. But I find more than not people are only interested in giving an opinion without any sort of rhyme or reason as to why they feel that way. If you think a film is a masterpiece, why do you think that? Its not wrong to have an opinion and I'm not trying to tell anybody there opinion is wrong. But you shouldn't just throw out terms like "masterpiece" when discussing cinema unless you have an argument to support such a statement of fact.

Hi, welcome to the internet.

Anyway...So let me get this straight. We are not allowed to call Do The Right Thing a masterpiece unless we sufficiently justify our beliefs to you. However you can claim that There Will Be Blood is a masterpiece without any supporting evidence.

I look forward to your justification of TWBB's masterpiece status. Thanks.

I gave you two(of many) examples of this movie being extremely well thought of. You have given me nothing to convince me that this movie is not great or a masterpiece. That's not being naive that's providing facts.

BTW, you're full of crap. The first post you made in here stated you didn't think Do the Right Thing or any Spike Lee film should be labeled a masterpiece.

Can't wait to hear the reason's why it's not a masterpiece.

Thanks!

Holy moly, I totally forgot about Groo! Used to read it as a kid, after years of reading my father's old Mad Magazines (Sergio was great).

Anyway, I'll have to look into this movie being discussed, I don't think I have ever seen it...reading the review in 3....2....1....

Have you watched the blu-ray or are you basing your judgement solely on a few screenshots on the internet? Watch it in action, it's phenomenal.
Yes, let's just put some DNR too. After all, it'll look much more like eye candy without all that grain!

Sad to see that people just don't get it. Would you make the dark blu sky in Van Gogh's Starry Night light blue because "It looks better?" It wasn't a DVD error, it was an artistic decision by the cinematographer. Saying I LIKE IT, IT'S EYE CANDY completely misses the point.

1) Once again I agree, TWBB is a masterpiece. Half my posts on this site are related to how awesome i think it is. Is it a drama, a comedy, a horror film, or revenge flick? When i watch it, i have no idea i'm watching a movie. It feels like the most well produced/written/acted/scored/filmed documentary in the history of the world. The oil derrick explosion scene gives my whole body goosebumps. It puts me in a trance.
2) Find some time and watch the Matrix. It's a great trip with lots of fun action and enough brain candy to elevate it above 99% of other movies in it's genre.
3) Sorry, i completely misunderstood your comment. I thought you were saying you had bought them individually, but re-bought them in the boxset as well because it was the easiest way to beef up your collection count. I'm stupid.

4) and this is actually back on topic. I haven't seen Do the Right Thing since it came out. I remember really liking it, but that's been a long time ago, so who knows what i'd think of it now. Since it is considered a classic and many people share that sentiment, i don't think it's too out of line for someone to say it's a masterpiece. Really, who are you to say it isn't? It's all subjective opinion anyways. Afterall, It's not like he's saying Transformers is a masterpiece. I do agree, however, that sometimes we get carried away with the superlatives. Not everything can be epic, awesome, legendary, magnum opus's, etc. Since the word eventually loses some of it's meaning if it's used too much.
