Do they just sit in an office and make up numbers to throw around? Do they really think the PS3 attach rate is less than 1?

And if their stand alone players have an attach rate of 4 movies, how do they think they can have an attach rate 7 times better than Blu-Ray stand alones?

Do they really think people will pay +/-$1500.00 for an HDTV, and another several hundred dollars for a Blu-Ray player and not purchase a single movie?

Morons.

one half of a disc in sales per PS3 sold. I mean WTF. Even a brain dead chimp would scratch it head at that. And HD-DUD is leading in software sales? What software can I go and get on HD-DUD right now. Ken, oh Ken. Its time to put the pipe down buddy. Crack Kills.

Speaking at IFA 2007, HD DVD Promotion Group co-chairman, Ken Graffeo, who is also Universal Studios Home Entertainment vice president for marketing, said that his format is selling seven times as many software titles per hardware unit than the Blu-Ray Disc format, which has been accused of distorting sales since the Sony PlayStation3 is not a 'standalone player' and should be categorised as a games console not a Blu-ray Disc player.

I thought universal was about to go neutral, are the going to fire ken soon?

I guess I'd better stop buying Blu-Ray movies. Ken says my PS3 isn't a Blu-Ray player.

I bought a PS3 so i could watch movies mostly, the gaming part of it is just a bonus, hell it has wireless internet so u can browse has a hard drive to store pictures music what ever u like. a PS3 is what I think is the ultimate media player for people who don't want to have a computer at home!

With that all said, people most likely buy a PS3 cause it is for games for there kids. I would also bet a lot people that bought it for there kids have NO idea of what it is able to really do!

So his statment of him saying the standalone players of HD out selling could very well be true. But he is really not taking into account why buy a standalone player when you can buy a PS3 and have movies, games, and internet all in one!

Wouldn't surprise me to be honest.

Now, the PS3 attach rate with folks where it's >1 to begin with. That'd be mighty fine metric to watch, and prolly be the one to actually observe to resolve the 'game console not a movie system' issue. Harder to track though.

HD DVD uses stats to claim victory over Blu-ray
By James Wells in Berlin

BERLIN: The HD DVD Promotion Group has released statistics that show it is attaching seven times more software than Blu-ray and holds 70 per cent of the IT and standalone high definition player market in Europe.

The statistics used to confirm that HD DVD is selling seven times the number of software pieces per hardware device compared to Blu-ray are complex.

Graffeo claims that European GfK data suggests that only one Blu-ray movie is sold for every two Sony PlayStation3 consoles – the major hardware device which plays Blu-ray media. Meanwhile, Graffeo claims consumers who purchase an HD DVD device, purchase four software titles.

"The high def format is about standalone players, not games machines. And the truth is that the jury is still out on whether gamers actually will buy movies in favour of games. We don't think so. And the number of movies sold for PS3 seems to confirm this,” Graffeo said.

HD DVD claims it represents 70 per cent of current standalone player sales in Europe and 70 per cent of the high definition PC drive market, while Blu-Ray claims it has 70 per cent of next generation high definition disc sales.

Even though just half a Blu-Ray Disc is sold per PlayStation3 purchase, Blu-Ray software has outsold HD DVD software by three to one since the games console was launched in March.

To clarify the actual overall situation between the two formats in Europe however, additional statistics are required.
The Blu-ray camp has estimated that with Sony’s 1.3 million PlayStation3s sold in 2007, this gives them a 94 per cent share of the overall hardware market, leaving just six per cent or 83,000 players for the HD DVD format.

Based on HD DVD’s claims, there should then be half a Blu-Ray disc per PS3 unit or 650,000 software units. This means Blu-ray is twice as strong as HD DVD even when they sell four discs for each of its 83,000 units or 332,000 software units in total.

HD DVD claimed that its players were more affordable and “half the cost of Blu-ray players” and also offered more superior interactive features as well as network connectivity. Graffeo claimed that features that will be available in the upcoming HD DVD release of Heroes such as trivia, online forums and games will only be available in next generation Blu-ray players with Java applications.

Graffeo said the HD DVD format has the support of 75 per cent of European independent film studios who will release an additional 90 titles in Europe this year, taking the total to 400 by the end of 2007.

Graffeo claimed that for the 20 million Europeans, HD DVD is the only high definition format to provide the most consistent experience for consumers.

To compete more aggressively with Blu-ray, HD DVD has announced a standalone player will be released for under €300 ($AU495) by Christmas from Canadian company Venturer.
thats right. oh wait........keyword.............GRAFFEO CLAIMED. graffeo is pathetic some one should tape his mouth or stick a hot dog in his mouth. Universal needs to get on top of that. i can't believe that they pay this pathetic piece of trash, so he can claim all he wants.....

i rest my case.....

Well if Graffeo said it...it must be true...I mean i've been buying all these Blu-Rays...all of those AVC encodes and PCM uncompressed audio tracks...he's right I should have been buying HD-DVD...with it's bitstarved VC-1 encodes...and it's lack of high definition audio tracks...and no True HD on Transformers....oh God i've been wrong all this time.....

*Graffeo wakes up in a cold sweat*....and realizes it was all a dream.

I think Graffeo is my new favorite comedian. Everytime he opens his mouth I just break out in uncontrollable laughter! ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!

Hmmm... if I'm doing the math correctly... accounting for the nine BD movies that are coming in... let's see... 9 * 2 halves per one disc... wow... I'm going to have 18 half-discs to watch on my PS3...

Well, so much for the statistics of only 1/2 disc per PS3...

I rule!

I think someone from Paramount gave Graffeo a GIANT piece of crack when they got their bribe from Toshiba/M$. I guess $150 million can buy a lot of crack. What a total douchebag. Hmmm..........I guess all the Blu Ray titles I've been buying don't count since I only use it as a game machine.

Sadly guys...I have to admit...I'm a PS3 owner and I've only bought half of a BD

Oh! Wait..I forgot about the other 29.5 discs I have behind that!!! My bad, nevermind!

This guy is comparing numbers from PS3 to numbers of standalone HD-DVD players.

Why not for a change include ALL BD players and ALL HD-DVD players
and then compare those to ALL BD AND HD-DVD Numbers!

I wish they would stop clouding reality and just show REAL numbers and stop making the numbers favor them by only including/excluding what they want.

I may not be reading this right, but from what I read they don't count the PS3 when they cite player sales but they do count it when they cite attach rates. HD-DVD has more player sales when they don't count the PS3 because it is a 'game' console but they also claim that the have a higher attach rate and that there is only .5 discs sold for every PS3. You can't say that statistic when a paragraph earlier you claim that the PS3 doesn't count because it is a game console!! Either you count the PS3 or you don't you can't include it when it fits and disallow it when it doesn't. It legitamitely is a blu-ray player and its also the cheapest one on the market, you're telling me that someone would pay more for a standalone that doesn't even have all the capabilities of the PS3 because they are a 'dedicated' movie watcher, shenanigans!! I declare shenanigans!!

Perhaps GW's speech writers have been writing for the HD-DVD camp.
