Definitely want to grab the 4K Ultimate Collection but can almost guarantee it'll be $45-$50 come Black Friday. I can wait a few months.

I've lost track of the number of times these films have been reissued in collections like this. This makes, what, the 3rd 4K set?

So it seems like the new Ultimate Collection (4K+BD) is that same kind of packaging that the Back to the Future set was released in, a.k.a. disc scratch city. Really want to get this but this kind of packaging should be banned.

The only way Jurassic Park (1993) will ever get a Director’s approved visuals and sound (2013 3D version is the ever closest to that, even involving the original DOP for the 3D version) is if this movie gets the CRITERION treatment. By some miracle, getting that for its 30th Anniversary would be great.

Not sure I agree with that. I would prefer it gets the Sony or Warner Bros. treatment? Let's get more specific. Whoever oversaw the 4K UHD of The Patriot please be hired freelance to walk into Universal Studios, demand a fresh scan and bringing in whatever talent you did for that.

I'd pay 50$ price tag w/ regular amaray packaging for that. That's my miracle.

Maybe they should let Peter Jackson have a go.

I'm sure he could make it look even worse.

Yeah, I’ve heard his Beatles doco looks like DNR’d shite.

Spielberg appears to be a fan of film grain in BD/UHD shot on film if Saving Private Ryan and War of the Worlds are anything to go by OR it could be that these are both Paramount titles. The Close Encounters UHD and ET are both filmic presentations and Indiana Jones doesn’t look too bad.
Jaws is an anomaly due to the restoration of the OCN. With that amount of damage, I would assume it would be hard to keep the film’s natural grain structure.
So why did the original Jurassic Park get such a shite transfer? Who can say. You’d think the DOP and Spielberg himself would have been contacted requestIng approval. But yeah, hard concur with I-C-Blue. I don’t think we will see it revisited anytime soon, if ever. It’s been six years and I have yet to hear about a UHD re-release (new 4K transfer for UHD).
Maybe if 8K scanning becomes a process that is embraced by the home video community. I do believe Spielberg’s favourite film as a child, Lawrence of Arabia, was scanned at 8K, with such detail that they found the film had warped, ever so minutely, in the desert sun.

And with directors like Lucas and Cameron, I hear people blame 3D processing for really shite waxy looking DNR transfer (the holy trilogy and Terminator 2). IMO, I think they like the look of the films, ‘cos they come closer to looking like they are filmed digitally.

My reasoning is sound. Lucas has been a proponent of digital filming and Cameron, with his work on Avatar, has embraced digital and 3D.
If Aliens comes out on UHD and has a really filmic look with a beautifully resolved grain structure and not the soupy mess that is T2.

We’re just going to have to accept the UHD transfers of Jurassic Park, T2 and Star Wars Episodes IV-XI as they are, or keep and watch their Blu-Ray originals, upscaled to 4K/24 by 4K players/4K TV’s, since there is very little chance of a “New transfer for UHD BD” occurring in the near future.

Prove me wrong Mr Spielberg, Mr Cameron and Mr Lucas. Prove… me… wrong.

Spielberg ain't anti-grain, he loves the little details which make a film a film. I recall some users on this forum being disappointed when War of the Worlds came to Blu back in 2010 because of the pronounced film grain. Remember, he was doing photochemical finishes rather than DIs for quite some time.

Ha, nah, Universal didn't call anyone requesting approval. Just the QC department, probably. He doesn't seem too concerned about home video presentations unless it involves revisionism; he learned his lesson about revisionism and reversed course.

Spielberg and Cundey being actively involved in a JP 4K remaster would be really something. Cundey, in particular, would be the man to preserve dat film grain and the correct colours.

Not sure if he's ever spoken about his preferred home video format, but it wouldn't surprise me if he owns film prints like some of his colleagues.

Yeah, definitely. Remember that E.T. abomination on DVD, where E.T was CGI’d.

Heard rumours be was going to CGI the shark in Jaws! There is a very sad alternative universe out there, where Spielberg went headlong into the abyss of revisionism.

Great South Park episode about it. Free Hat

And the re-release of the very first South Park!

After decades of pop culture jokes about the shark looking fake, you can forgive him for entertaining this option. A mid-noughties CGI shark would've looked pretty atrocious, but it would be fun - purely as a novelty alternative - to add a CGI shark in 2022, assuming it was done tastefully. Just as long as the original version is still widely available

I know, blasphemy, but it would be fun to see.

ANYWAY, so Jurassic Park on 4K, huh?

Yes. Definitely blasphemy. However, I could abide an example of what could be done. Say, with Quint’s demise, released as an extra perhaps, just for curiosity’s sake. But I definitely wouldn’t want something out there like the E.T. Special Edition DVD.
Imagine if with Jurassic Park, they changed the look of the first Brachiosaurus the scientists (and chaitician), see. By today’s standards, it just doesn’t pass muster (the T-Rex vs. Jeep still does mind you). it would just be plain wrong to tamper with JP’s CGI. I’m all for the removal of camera rigs and broken windscreens for continuity (maybe leave the testicles alone), but any changes to SFX, you go down the slippery slope of revisionism and you get the quagmire that is the Star Wars OT: Screams added, removed, added, and I do believe that Han and Greedo now shoot almost simultaneously.
Spielberg stopped in his tracks after E.T., and thank the Gods he did. Imagine if Raiders was re-tweaked. Oh wait, there is this.

https://youtu.be/9hHvH2dbfvU

Noooooooo! (Not to be confused with a cowardly scream after diving off a Cloud City power station OR The Emperor being thrown into the chasm of the Death Star). Mr Spielberg, with all due respect. Let it be. Please, no more. The matte painting will suffice. Leave your films as they are.

I'm SO, so, sooo against a CGI shark being made to some alternative Jaws edition. The magic was in the shark being sparing. A CGI version may tempt them to show too much. But I'm so, so, so down for Jurassic Park's CGI shots to be re-done to match the live-action dinosaurs footage even better, for a new generation. From a fresh scan of assets that is archived in 4K HDR and released alongside this "new" version. All in DV.

Arbitrary that I have this distinction? Yes. Care that I am not consistent when I tend to externally covet being so? No. Not really

I would LOVE new 4K scan to archive and/or release alongside some fancy new JP edition. The key part truly is as long as both are included. Or a version exists on the latest format first.

I guess it’s not out of the question for a re-release of Jurassic Park in 4K, by Arrow or Criterion, to get it done right, since Disney is partnering with Criterion to do a UHD release of Wall-E!
So I guess anything is possible…
Maybe even the live action Star Wars TV series making it to Blu-Ray/UHD (i.e. The Mandolorian, Book of Boba Fett, Kenobi and Andor). Fingers crossed.

Six years since what? The first four JP UHDs came out in 2018 in advance of Fallen Kingdom's theatrical release.

Six years since the first UHD BD, ever was released (March 1st, 2016), and as far as I know, there has not been one UHD title that was re-released with a newer scan/transfer/version.
