Eh, they'll be fine. My bone to pick is why did Blackphone only get a BD release?

Doesn't matter. The first film made so much money that it's been riding the gravy train ever since.

don’t think people who watched it for free saying it was bad is going to affect the box office. horror movies and franchises are magically critic proof, but this is the one that people act like reviews matter?

sure. ok.

if it doesn’t have legs, it’s because those have been cut off by having this on peacock st the same time. who is going to see it multiple times when you can watch it again at home?

chris landon said it right.

[Show spoiler]I would imagine having Laurie talking over like the last 20% of the movie isn't helping.

The movie — the final in the trilogy returning Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode — opened to $41.2 million from 3,901 theaters, the lowest of the three films. Heading into the weekend, Hallloween Ends was expected to open in the same range as Halloween Kills, or $50 million.

Overseas, it scared up $17.7 million for a global start of $58.4 million.

$40 million was more than enough to win the weekend domestically for Universal, Miramax and Blumhouse. It is only the twelfth film of 2022 so far to open to $40 million or more.

Director Chinonye Chukwu’s acclaimed drama Till, starring Danielle Deadwyler as the mother a young Black boy who is lynched in the Jim Crow South, is opening in 16 locations. The film, from MGM and UAR, is looking at a promising per-location average of $15,000.

There'll likely be a huge 2nd weekend drop also, especially with Black Adam coming.

‘Freaky’ Director Christopher Landon Calls Out Studios For Day-And-Date Releases After ‘Halloween Ends’ Box Office Results

Quote:
Christopher Landon is resurrecting the day-and-date release topic after initial box office results for Halloween Ends have it coming in under studio estimates. The Freaky director is calling out movie studios for releasing movies in theatres and streaming services at the same time.

“Ooooooh I feel another rant coming on: Today it’s the Day & Date release strategy for Halloween Ends. Stop doing this. Please. It doesn’t work. Studios: stop gambling with filmmakers and their movies to try and prop up your fledgling streaming services,” Landon tweeted.

Halloween Ends was estimated to finish off its first weekend at $55M with Jamie Lee Curtis’ Laurie Strode potentially facing serial killer Michael Meyers one final time. However, as the box office results were reported, the film is expected to only make $43.4M in theatres.

Landon is attributing the underwhelming results to Universal releasing the movie to Peacock subscribers on the same day as theatres. The film director recalled that he faced a similar situation when Freaky was released in 2020.

“This happened to me on Freaky and it destroyed us. We worked SO HARD to make a fun movie. Blood sweat and tears. Months away from our families. And for what? They love to use the term: ‘two bites of the apple’ but that’s just another way of saying ‘we’re gonna use your movie as a Guinea pig’ for our Streaming service,” he added in a second tweet.

Landon continued, “Sorry. I begged the studio not to do this. Either circle the wagons and protect it for theatrical or just go all in on streaming. Don’t split hairs. At least the Halloween folks were made whole. We got hosed. So yeah…bitter subject. PTSD.”

He ended his rant by directing a note to the studios asking them to “stop trying to suck two d****s at the same time. Honor the sanctity of the theatrical experience.”

But hey, keep throwing stuff online for free basically. To appease a certain demographic of people.

Does he seriously think Freaky was going to make more than 9 million, no matter how it was released in 2020?

The Freaky director is just salty he didnt get more money. You can tell cause his tweet mentions “…others were made whole. We got hosesd”. If he got more $ from the studio he wouldnt care the movie streamed or not.

no one thought happy death day was going to make it money when it first came out, but it did with a strong push and support during its theatrical run.

I'm sure streaming is hurting it's box office some, but it's still over an $8M drop from Halloween Kills opening weekend, which also was day and date on Peacock. I'd say the reason for the drop is that many thought Halloween Kills sucked, and this one has gotten even worse word of mouth.

$60 million already puts it in top half in terms of highest grossing in the franchise. (Unadjusted for inflation, naturally, but still.) Not bad for what is the 13th film of a franchise.

But even just factoring in the Blumhouse films as their own separate horror trilogy, the third film in most of of them is usually the lowest grossing of the three.

I’m one of those who watched it at home and I thought it was ok. Thought the last half hour or so was very good.

I think most horror movies are front loaded anyways where most of the BO is made that opening weekend. And yes there are exceptions of course but even you name brand horror franchise do most of their business in that first weekend, maybe their second weekend too

And since the Halloween 2018 made so much $$$ and the production budgets on Kills and End were both under 20 million or so (could be wrong on those figures) that they didnt need to kill the box office on those to make a profit that they could put on Peacock for content purposes
