Regardless, that’s not what we’re even talking about. There’s no way to access the HDR Setting menu pictured without the HDR Setting button. |

Not magically, no, but if you go from the presets to the advance settings it shows you the value of each, if I recall it's only the top slider that changes, as you choose more contrast or peak brightness from the Standard setting.

Point being, if you’re not using a remote with the HDR Setting button it is impossible to access its menu. |

It is, but whilst I get your point, the presets, if I recall are from dark room to light room and the slider represents the same thing. But you have a more detailed options menu.
At the end of the day I generally set it to Standard and if I need to tweak it, I can adjust the slider and not change to another preset. |

Both of my remotes work just fine on mine with the $15 remote and my 420 and 820. i don’t mess with the sub titles so I have no idea about that.

I’m wondering if there’s a workaround to get DVDs to play at 24fps. I’m not too hopeful considering the 60Hz bug for USB content (which is disappointing enough).

172 one has separate HDR button as well as handy -10s and +60s direct jump buttons. I think I will order also 172 replacement version just to get those jump buttons. HDR button functionality is already discussed in few post above. Last edited by hansolo; 12-01-2022 at 07:45 AM. |

This is a question for you longstanding owners of the 820 player. Is it really that bad with scratched discs (for both 2K BD and UHD)? Best Buy has an extended return period so I decided to try it out and see how much I like it over my current Sony X700. If it has a problem with most scratched discs, I don't think I can keep it. It's been my experience that more than 2 out of 3 discs put out by SF (the label I collect most heavily) over the past few years have scratches.

Thanks for your input, Geoff. I plan on getting my worst scratched discs that play fine with my X700 and give them a spin on the new 820. I think you're right about the hardware lottery. X700 owners seem to be sharply divided between those that have next to no problems and those with constant problems with it that make them want to pull their hair out.

I just got a Region Free UB820 (UK model, actually) from 220 Electronics.
[Show spoiler] This unit is incredible, and it’s really helped to make my recent LG G2 OLED purchase well worth the investment. Couldn’t be happier.Minor caveats: -Automatic resolution switching is broken. -Uncomfortable and awkward remote. Though, as stated prior, an upgraded replacement was easy and inexpensive. -Poor streaming app software. But that’s what my Apple TV 4K is for. -Forced 60Hz content. I’m holding onto my Sony X800 for USB files and DVDs. Note: The UHD players I’d previously tried were… -UB820 (Region A locked), but I couldn’t stand to neglect the piles of imported Blu-rays. -Sony X800M2, which inexplicably looked worse than the X800 (as detailed by @Geoff D in that thread), and DV must be enabled manually. -Sony X700, which I thought was all around poor in terms of build quality and performance.
