Suing over something you publicly defended four years prior rarely ends well.

Not to mention that this was 55 years ago.

I don't know why they retired doing these. I mean I know the artist sadly passed away. But they could at least hire someone new in honour of them to do it again but with a different style.

It's always awesome to see Criterion give a sneak peek at what they're working on for the new year. Sad that they don't do that anymore, although Eureka seems to be doing it (Although the stills make it clear as to which movie it is instead of having a drawing).

They must be either woke, or broke.

Maybe Brooke Shields will sue Paramount, too. Pretty Baby was only 45 years ago.

In response Criterion also state this: The best way to tell if your disc from the list is defective is by looking on the underside of the disc (the shiny side) and if you see the letters 'BVDL' your disc will be fine. If you don't see those letters you should have it replaced.

Strangely my The Lady Vanishes has the BVDL on the disc, but will not load on any of my players. Still need to get it replaced.
Is that list easily available anywhere?

I mean, it's not a small thing, much of the staff - last I heard - is still working from home, and they just had a round of layoffs. It's a lovely thing, but with everything going on, I can't see it being a priority unless the right artist with the right sensibility came along. It's not something you just dial in an order for.

I just watched David Lynch: The Art Life last night on HBO Max. This is an enthralling arthouse documentary that for me, helped bring context to his filmography. A lot of pieces of the puzzle for me came together while watching this film about the director's early years engrossed in his paintings and art.

For example, there was a story that Lynch talked about regarding him as a young boy seeing a naked woman crossing the street at night that evoked a dreamlike reaction, and that helped explain the scene with Isabella Rossellini in Blue Velvet that originated from this experience he had.

There is no doubt that the dream sequences that span most of his films have their roots in his childhood upbringing. This is how his films were shaped and driven over the decades, from his utopian, idyllic childhood living in Boise, Idaho. After he moved to Virginia, I gained an understanding of Lynch's disinterest in going to school and doing assignments, and preferring to spend his time outside of his class and painting.

I also learned about Lynch's evolution from art into film, via his experiments with "moving paintings", as well as his tests with decaying food and animal carcasses. It seems like he had an incredible time creating and shooting Eraserhead on AFI's campus, using the entire school grounds as his cinematic playground. Jack Fisk, his longtime childhood friend, was a huge influence for him, as well as the time living in Philadelphia where David Lynch talked about the "thick fear" that overhang the city. It appears Philly made an indelible impact on Lynch, and empowered his art.

Though the documentary only follows his work up until Eraserhead, I think the film wisely avoids trying to cover too much, and focuses mainly on his early years. The film offers some good insight on the director and I would definitely recommend David Lynch: The Art Life to any fan of his.

Not sure what you mean. It's on that list, and they replaced my packaging for free. I wasn't even aware of the replacement program for that one until a few years ago.

When it first came out. The discs were just held on by those circular black hubs and it was flimsier than their other releases. They then released the digipack version with the regular full plastic disc holders.

Edit: Packaging photos

Thank you kindly. I have the original packaging and while I wasn’t bothered by the hubs the booklet was ripped out of the staples a bit. Perhaps I’ll request the new packaging when I place an order during the flash sale anticipated next month. Is there a particular procedure to the request?

Yeah, my All About Eve booklet also was damaged, and those black foam disc holders damaged other parts and no longer held the discs. Criterion is the only company that I'm aware of -- boutique or otherwise -- who essentially has a lifetime warranty on their discs and packaging. You just have to contact them by email at mulvaney@criterion.com and request a replacement.

More info on their site.

Considering that the 15th lands in the middle of a three day weekend, is there any chance of Criterion making their announcements early this week or will it certainly be on the 17th?
