Universal has ruined the color timing of this. It's not what Spike Lee made. They've changed it from the hottest day of the year to a breezy spring day.
Oy. The same thing happened with Anchor Bay's subsequent Halloween releases.

Have you watched the blu-ray or are you basing your judgement solely on a few screenshots on the internet? Watch it in action, it's phenomenal.
You're right that it does look much more naturalistic, and the detail in the image is stunning. But the "orange" look to the film was intentional. Personally, I get much more of a sense of heat in the original transfer than the new one.

I still plan on getting this release very soon, but this is another reason why I'm not going to get rid of my Criterion release either.

You're welcome to feel that way, just as I'm welcome to disagree with you completely. Do The Right Thing is a bona fide masterpiece, as far as I'm concerned.

Believe me, I do not throw the term around lightly. Out of the hundreds of thousands of films, I think I might call 20-30 masterpiece?

It's obvious that you don't care for Lee's work, and that's okay. But to accuse me of mindlessly using a term to describe a film is absurd.

You are absolutely right, and I apologize. I let my opinion of the film cloud my judgement.

Alot of people have been throwing around some BS about how the orange was only on the Criterion release. But through the magic of Google cache, here's how they're wrong!

http://tinyurl.com/l9ukuc

Wow, would you look at that. The 1998 Universal DVD actually was MORE orange!

My point isn't that you shouldn't think it's not a masterpiece, but to accuse me of "throwing the term around" is really stupid.

And I'm not going to sit down and figure out my top 30 films of all time, but off the top of my head here's some films I'd consider masterpieces: 2001: A Space Odyssey, Last Year at Marienbad, Hiroshima Mon Amour, Chinatown, Apocalypse Now, Bigger Than Life, Lawrence of Arabia, The Cranes Are Flying, The Last Temptation of Christ, Citizen Kane, Vertigo, Singin' in the Rain, Meet Me In St. Louis, Raging Bull, The Passion of Joan of Arc, City Lights, Annie Hall.

I'm only going by the pics on DVDBeaver but this new issue looks very wrong to me without the orange tint. As the Criterion DVD transfer was approved by Ernest Dickerson I wonder what he'd have to say about this

I'm never too sure about those tests when it comes to yellow or warm coloring, had the same thing with the Godfather on my Television you can change the colour matrix from ITU 601 to ITU 709 which is the standart colour matrix for HD, and that ads a warm colour to the image on 601 colours look allways too red like in those tests, now if you upconvert a DVD it's still the 601 matrix because the studio masters are made according to this matrix. But the Godfather was less yellow than the old DVD's but never as red as those tests.

But I find more than not people are only interested in giving an opinion without any sort of rhyme or reason as to why they feel that way. If you think a film is a masterpiece, why do you think that? Its not wrong to have an opinion and I'm not trying to tell anybody there opinion is wrong. But you shouldn't just throw out terms like "masterpiece" when discussing cinema unless you have an argument to support such a statement of fact.
I actually grew up in the NY metropolitan area at the time this movie was made and saw this in the movie theater when it came out. And IMO it is a masterpiece due to the fact that this movie more than than any other REPRESENTS the feel and ATTITUDE of New York at that time. People were really like that. Its a beautiful movie.

I have been to ten stores in my area trying to find it...and nobody seems to have this which really bums me out. I guess I will have to try and find it in stock somewhere online.

are you saying Spike Lee was recognized on that list because he's black?

I can't figure out what else you could mean but I'd like to give you a chance to explain yourself one way or another.

you're already coming off as a bad type of film snob. I don't mind having specific and critical tastes but seriously jumping on people for calling this movie a masterpiece is ridiculous.

edit - also I consider TWBB to be pretty far from a masterpiece. you speak with more authority than you should IMO as far as what is/isn't a masterpiece.

It's a miracle a film like this was even made. I'm sure the White pseudo-liberal Hollywood industry had plenty of sleepless nights after this was released.
No doubt, the same ugly White Supremacist rear their head when people call this film 'a masterpiece', but hey, we all know where they're coming from.

The White Race, like the German Race, has plenty to be ashamed of.

So did Criterion lose the rights to publish this one or something? I've never actually seen the physical Criterion disc on store shelves (I rented it) so I assumed it was an older release that went out of print. I really wish they would do a proper release of this. I usually don't mind slight changes to picture but this one seems insane to me.
