Seriously, I've never, ever heard someone say "Superman is poorly written".

I'm not sure you understand what argument by authority is. It's okay, though. It's a logical fallacy, and here's a definition:

Quote:
Appeal to authority is the misuse of an authority's opinion to support an argument. While an authority's opinion can represent evidence and data, it becomes a fallacy if their expertise or authority is overstated, illegitimate, or irrelevant to the topic.
I should note that you didn't even rise to the level of "Mario Puzo liked it." It's just "Mario Puzo worked on it." Are you arguing that everything Mario Puzo rights is golden and in no need of a critical eye?

I'm not sure I've ever heard anyone defend the actual writing.

The physical production, the special effects, the casting, the performances, I'm all on board with and I've heard defended many, many times.

But the writing? It's a mess, and the time travel to fix everything at the end is just the capper.

LOL I was talking about Lois getting promoted. And you wrote a definition for something that I wasn't even talking about.

Nice! She got a promoted!

When did that happen? When is that ever referenced?

"I'm giving him the city beat."

"Chief, that's my beat"

Looks like, again, you missed something.

"Now...go to the American Southwest and interview a guy who's having worthless land bought by an anonymous purchaser and he's happy about it. This is well worth your time. Also, you need to learn to spell."

You know...a well-written movie would have introduced this as Lois' personal journalistic crusade upon her introduction, but Perry White won't let her investigate it, insisting that she stay in the city. Instead, the movie just suddenly has her show up in a car in the desert without any build up. Her investigation, that she'd be running off the books, so to speak, would be revealing a nasty undercurrent to this business that could then, eventually, feed into the Lex Luthor plot.

Instead, happy little interview in a car with a Native American at the start of the third act that comes out of nowhere.

Seriously, the basic building blocks of narrative storytelling are largely missing from this film. I do not understand why it gets such an easy pass from so many people, and has for so long.

Which they did - her ambition for writing a Pulitzer-prize winning article.

Again, you missed something.

Maybe you should pay attention to the films you're criticizing.

In what part of the interview with the Native American man does she make is sound like has Pulitzer Prize winning material?

"The land is worthless, and I happily sold it to him."

There's no investigation. There's a single interview that raises few red flags, that she doesn't treat all that seriously, and has this light tone to it. You're implying far too much into the barest of scenes. The actual narrative legwork to build all of this up is simply not done. At best, we're getting half-lines of dialogue to justify it. It's not anything like an arc or a plot. It's a very quick staccato series of moments that is a very thin justification for her being in peril in the middle of a special effects sequence outside the city.

And...it's never referenced before 2/3 of the way through the film.

Also, the time travel stuff still sucks.

This is a first. In 45 years at that.

Puzo wrote the story, but Tom Mankiewicz actually wrote the screenplay - credited as a "creative consultant" because he was brought in by Richard Donner as a fixer. One of the many things that irritated the Salkinds, and used to fire Donner for. But Puzo's original screenplay was indeed "poorly written".

Goes along with my point. Heck, even Leonard Part 6 may have a few fans, though certainly not near as many as Showgirls. (My guilty pleasure? Glitter. )

Yeah, all it takes is someone to be backed into a corner for them to say "poorly written".
