IMO it's not but I agree it should be way better than it is. Kind of ridiculous that I have to use two UHD players because one lacks good DVD upscaling. I have the 203 on top of the UB9000 and my 203 has a region mod. I actually like the setup though the 203 is great for networking and USB playback. My LX500 is getting a rest.

I got to send in my 205 something happened with the mainboard a few months ago after a Tstorm. I would power it up and the drive would open and close. I left it off for a few days and than it just wouldn't come on. It ain't the power supply I checked the voltages. I think a surge from lightning fried it. All my other components including TV survived the ordeal but the 205. I have a surge protector but it still happened. I hope they keep servicing them this year.

On account of the chroma bug in the Oppo 203, I would also buy the UB9000 if I had craploads of money. I'd keep my region-switchable Oppo 103 though

I bought a UB820 last year, my first 4k blu-ray player. Is there a way to watch a 3d disc on the player or watch a 3d disc in 2d? I pop in a 3d disc but it can't even play, the player has video settings for 3d.

I think so but you also have to have a 3D capable TV

To that point, I've never had a problem with how my DVDs look on the 820 and 9000. Maybe it's just because my TVs are really good...but they've always looked pretty good.

Exactly this.

Dang. Just ran into my first region B movie (88 Films' Story of Ricky) that won't play with the remote trick.

If we are allowed to talk about it, what's the cheapest and/or safest region mod these days?

The only mod available at the moment seems to be the rattlebyte mod. The elusive regionfreedom seems to be kaput

Slightly off topic but I'm seeing a lot of region free Sony players on eBay. Are Sony Blu-ray players just region free by default or have these been modified?

I'm debating if I want to mod by Panny 820 or just have a side player for the random region B movie. I don't have soldiering skills so it might just be easier to have another player...

They are NOT region free by default. It’s against the rules.

How much does the mod cost? You can get a very basic unlocked Sony BD player for about $150. That's what I had before I upgraded to 4K.

Initially, when I did upgrade, I got a modded Sony UBP-X700. Then I ran into the freezing issues, found out about the 820, and got an open-box unit on eBay, which I supplemented with the modded standard BD player I'd been using before. Having two Blu-ray players in my setup struck me as a pretty inelegant solution, but a pre-modded 820 would've cost too much, and having lived with it for a bit, this setup works just fine.

The mod is about $70 but requires "advanced soldering" skills according to the site. The instructions aren't very clear either. I did an Xbox mod years ago so I have tried soldering before but it's definitely not something I'm confident in.

I don't really want a 2nd player but that might be the easiest solution. I don't know if there is an easy way to find someone with soldering skills locally. I guess some kind of electronics repair shop which probably would be hard to find. Or, just git gud and learn to solder.

The Euro 820/824 models will not work in the US, so my guess is no.

you should buy a converter from 220v to 110V then it will work . Already bought mine from US and it is working perfect using a converter

You would need something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Yinleader-Vol...01&sr=8-5&th=1

They will run you about $40 to $50 USD.

Yeah, the two-player setup works fine for me, but I don't know if I'd have gone that route if I didn't already have the second player lying around.

If it's the RattleByte mod you're looking at, it looks like the type B cable harness, which leaves only two connections that need soldering, is listed as compatible with the DP-UB820. That'd at least cut down on the amount of soldering required. Have you opened up your player to see if it's got the connectors for that?

Unless it's a very old player it won't have the connector on the motherboard. The instructions are clear so if you can't follow them it's best left alone.
