Not to mention that if done correctly it could be one the finest pictures to grace our screens. The production values, acting, everything was top notch. One of the best films of the last 20 years hands down.

I wouldn't go that far. I love the movie but it has its flaws.

If you don't mind sacrificing detail then it's an ok release. I absolutely love the movie, but the release is marred by DNR, and basically it comes down to how much you love the movie. I myself love it, and didn't have it on DVD, so I bought the Blu. I don't regret buying it, but I will definitely buy a re-release if there is one.

Oh?

It's even worse if you can recognize DNR. The EE halos are just unmistakable though.

I bought this last week for $15. I had never seen this movie before till then. I'm actually currently in the middle of watching it again for the 2nd time while posting this. The PQ...while not horrible isn't great. Wasn't as bad as what I was expecting...I've seen and owned a lot of blu-rays that are worse. My friend has the dvd and was watching it a few days ago when I was at his place and had the chance to do a little comparing. The blu-ray is better and I don't think there will be a newer release anytime soon. Which is a shame for this movie...but unfortunately your going to have that with some movies released. If your a fan...you want the best offered...I'd get it around $15 or less. If anything rent it and make the choice for yourself. I think there are a lot worse blu-rays you can buy and complain about over this one by far. The sound quality is amazing fyi.

What titles would that be? I think this, along with The Longest Day and Gulliver's Travels are among the worst Blu-rays available. I'd like to know which titles you think are worse than this.

I'm with KubrickFan. I'm dying to hear this list. i've seen hundreds of blu-rays and i really can't think of any that come close to this mess. hands down, the worst blu-ray from a major studio - i've even seen DVDs that look better (not the GONY DVD - that's beyond redemption).

so bring it on. please.

there is usually a solid argument when that's the case... this seems clearly to be a low quality br. still a good movie, still better than the dvd, but not really satisfactory.

err, yes it is. are you ok ?

so give me an example of what YOU think is bad then.

and what display are you watching on ? as this is all meaningless without this.

i'm on a JVC RS 1 (about 110 inch). and trust me, this blu-ray ... very, very bad. and that's not an exaggeration.

agree the faces are kind of smeared and you can't see the face pigments in almost all scenes. But its still sharp enough and clear. Of course it would win awrds in the PQ department

Young Guns is bad.
Gangs blu ray is a step up from the DVD

Your post confuses..
Faces smudged and unclear.... would win awards in the PQ department?

If you meant AQ I again disagree, it was good audio but nothing to write home about.

I didn't know they have Razzies for Blu-rays .

And of course it looks better than the dvd, but that doesn't mean it looks good. The dvd was crap too.

I really like most of Scorsese's work and really want to see and own this movie on blu-ray. Also the movie is going for $15.99 right now on amazon.

Is the PQ so bad that I should just wait for a re release of this movie down the road?
I have this and I admit that the PQ isn't the greatest, yet it isn't so bad that you need to avoid it like the plague. While I watched it, I noticed grain during some scenes, but mostly ignored it. Even Planet Earth has parts where there's lots of grain. I ignored that too. I recommed getting this instead of waiting for it to be re-released.

The other disc that people love to debate (PQ with regards to over-used DNR) is Patton.

Some do just buy for PQ. Me, personally sometimes I just like to watch a good movie even if the PQ/SQ isn't up to snuff (of course I'll take the blu versio when possible).

Watched GofNY on tv once on tv and that was enough for me. I didn't feel it was anything special, gory sure and some amusing parts but it kind of dragged.
