The old DVD masters fundamentally changed the color grading at the heart of the original project.

Revisionism seems fine as long as it matches whatever people are used to seeing.

I've never seen Red Bridge. Will definitely pick it up if Film Movement releases it on blu-ray.

Does Criterion have other titles other than the 4 they released on DVD? If they do a box set would be awesome. Otherwise an Eclipse style release with those 4 titles in 1080p would be fantastic too.

In the immediate though I'm strongly hoping for a 4K of Profound Desires of the Gods now that I know a 4K remaster exists!

The new grading is the by far more accurate one.

What about Dr Akagi? I've never seen that one but always sounded interesting. I wasn't a big fan of The Eel but seems to be a very loved one so here's hoping it gets an upgrade too.

I'm interested to know why you think that. Not doubting you. Just genuinely interested. When I first saw the 2011 blus they matched my memory of the theatrical presentation more or less.

They didn't "fundamentally change the color grading so at the heart of the original project."

They applied the accurate colors (well they didn't, but the restoration team did) the way Kieslowski and his DPs intended, and is very close to the way they looked theatrically. Don't let the bogus review full of misinformation fool you. It's also been proven countless times that the 4Ks are much closer to correct than the old discs.

Not to mention, the old blu of "Blue" is badly misframed, cutting off chins and showing mics at the top. The 4K fixes that along with the color grading.

Weird how the same thing keeps getting posted when its clearly been settled.

Just curious, does anybody know in what year the 50% sales actually started?

There are various videos on YouTube (in French) that give more detail into the restoration and particularly grading efforts:

https://www.youtube.com/supported_br...tube.com/watch
https://www.youtube.com/supported_br...tube.com/watch
https://www.youtube.com/supported_br...tube.com/watch

DPs were consulted where possible, and, more importantly, the grading was compared and matched to reference prints.

Hiventy has considerable expertise on film restoration and grading. I'd say similar conclusions apply to the more accurate grading of Le Cercle Rouge, via its new restoration.

They should. All of them are streaming on their service I believe.

Also won the Best Restored Film at the Venice Film Festival Classics last year so I have some expectations for this one. I wouldn't be surprised if Profound Desires is down the line as well. These are the only Nikkatsu films restored in 4K so far (I believe).
I hope they don't make us wait for Imamura's centenial for Profound Desires.

I second the idea of box sets for Imamura's earlier works. Would be an instant day 1. At this point any Japanese box set would be welcome frankly.

I was disappointed to find that the films in the Lubitsch musicals Eclipse set are not available on the Criterion Channel. Most aren't available to stream (legally) anywhere.

That's discouraging.

Yeah, Profound Desires would be exceptional news. It's been awhile since a Japanese boxset right? Zatoichi was the last one unless you count Lone Wolf and Cub?

I think there was a rumor of a Kinuyo Tanaka set, but that never happened.

There was someone bumping up the Hachi-ko US movies this week and would love to see the Japanese version from 1987 get a release.

If Criterion doesn't announce the flash sale soon I am going to set my Seven Samurai BD on fire in protest.

On the Criterion Blu-ray disc for Detour, Eureka 4K disc for the Das Cabinet des Dr Caligari, and some others, there are nice restoration features showing the old vs new versions. A lot of online arguments could be put to rest if more of these types of restoration features are put on these releases. Does this release have one?
