Confessions Of A Nazi Spy is an incredibly important film for Warner’s history and film history in general.

WB was one of the few studios to call out Nazi Germany from the beginning – many others didn’t follow their lead until they had to (M-G-M stayed in Germany until the U.S. declared war 1941).

Jack L. Warner was a major proponent of the US and the war effort (George says he’s not the first person that comes to mind when it comes to integrity, but one of the things he was unshakable on was the need to produce films like this).

There were genuine threats against the film (some may have been staged for publicity purposes, but there were real threats).

There was a German consul in Los Angeles who was intimidating most of the studios into staying quiet on Germany (George says he’s seen pictures of him and he looks like your “classic Hollywood evil Nazi, terrifying looking person. Like Colonel Klink but not funny”. (upon a Google search, picture attached here for reference). That guy would read scripts and let the Production Code know what they objected to and get them to remove it.

Reviewers and audiences responded so well, there was no chance for the German consul to stop it, but he tried.

Most of the cast and crew were refugees from Germany – director Anatole Litvak was born in Russia, worked for UFA in the 1930s, and fled to the US in the 1930s. Francis Lederer was from Czechoslovakia (had to Google that), but he fled from there to London to the U.S., and never went back even after the war, and lived until he was 100 in 2000 (George also talks how he was one of the first people interviewed for WB’s archival interview project – so if you see him in footage from 1995 talking about this film, it’s from those interviews).

Was one of the first 150 films WAC released on DVD, this Blu-ray is from a new 4K OCN scan, audio restored. Looks better than George as ever seen it – this hadn’t been remastered for the DVD release so it wasn’t remastered in over 25 years. At the end of the film, there was newsreel footage added to the film for reissue that shows the Nazis invading Europe, so that’s there. The credits are at the end of the film, which is common today, but unheard of back then.

Talks about Watch On The Rhine (1943) and how Paul Lukas, who plays the villain in this film, won a Best Actor Oscar for being the hero in that film (no mention made if this is on the release slate)

Marlene Dietrich was asked to be in this film, and while she was supportive of it, she turned it down for fear of reprisals. Anna Sten was asked too but turned it down for the same reason.

Edward G. Robinson agreed to star in this film as he agreed with this film’s message, he was by far the biggest star in this film – George Sanders was only just becoming known, most everyone else was more low profile. Grace Stafford appears in this film as well – she later married Walter Lantz and became the voice of Woody Woodpecker.

The script was only approved by the MPPA because it was based on true events – it likely wouldn’t have been approved otherwise.

WB had exited the German market before the film came out, so they felt they had nothing to lose by making this.

George talks about the Technicolor “History” shorts, and like mentioned above, he mentions the Oscar winning short Sons Of Liberty (1939) is being remastered from the nitrate OCNs.

George talks about 1939 and film – the apex of the pre-war studio system.

Talks about other studios finally going in with the war effort, M-G-M with The Mortal Storm in 1940 (out on Blu-ray already from WAC).

Confessions Of A Nazi Spy was a financial success, not the biggest one, but a success.

Security had to be hired for the theatres, but not many incidents happened.

Very unusual film, no producer was credited for it and Max Steiner was not credited for his work on the film as well for fear of reprisals.

George talks about the importance of history and film – part of WAC’s mission to get these out there – recalls talking with someone about a movie on the Civil War made in WWII that the other person felt reflected the 1940s more than the era the film was supposed to be set in.

The 1940 Technicolor short Meet The Fleet will be included as an extra from an HD transfer, starring Bill Orr, who later became Warner’s son in law and head of their TV department, greenlighting Maverick, 77 Sunset Strip, and many other classic WB shows of the period.

A making of short will be included in the extras for Confessions Of A Nazi Spy, and some text based extras as well for context on this film.
Anyone who found this post as informative as I did ought to be interested in the incredible German TV series from the 70s: Filmemigration aus Nazideutschland. If you look on Youtube for that title, you'll find all 5 parts subtitled. Litvak is on there as well as Fritz Lang and many many more people, some of whom fell by the wayside (in film career terms at least) once wrenched from their homelands because of the Nazis.

Here's Litvak in episode 1

Edit: not sure what's happening with that lin. Title is Günter Peter Straschek - Filmemigration aus Nazideutschland - Litvak at 33:15

While I'm glad we'll find out about new titles today, it is unfortunate that we went from having an active FB page for announcements, to them being posted at Amazon and MovieZyng, to having to now listen to a specific podcast to find out details of them (or realistically waiting for someone else to listen and post them here). I don't really see a valid reason why they can't be more communicative on their social media. It's not like their FB page is dead, they talk about a new film anniversary every day. They could easily convey announcements there too if they wanted, this isn't an issue of being too short-staffed. And hell, if that is their excuse, I'll help, and post on their social media for free

I share the same frustration

I am not 100% certain what happened, but it appears that last month's announcement came through a forum member who was pestering the Warner Archive Podcast host via email about pending announcements to the point that the information was provided to him (I am guessing with George's authorization) and then posted here and other forums.

For that reason, it's obvious the method of delivering these announcements has been extremely haphazard and I hope the studio does a better job in picking a better platform and more predictable timeline to make these announcements instead of making us scan through a podcast, or worse, just handing the information to a random Internet forum member who bothers the Podcast host via email for information to pass on to others. If nobody is minding social media over at Warner, maybe they can officially announce in one of these groups where the fans readily congregate.

Do we know they won't be posted to social media after the podcast?

What makes you think they won't use Facebook?

It could be they announce the list of titles on the Podcast first, and then follow it up with detailed announcements on FB?

And please tell me what month we didn't know about releases?

It seems like a lot of people over the past few years have already been 'posting on social media for free' getting the news out.

They haven't done any proper announcements for quite some time. In fact, the very first mention of Camille and I'll Cry Tomorrow was on the actual day they were released (March 7th). And absolutely nothing about titles like Confessions of a Nazi Spy, and The Prince and the Showgirl.

Also, just because we follow WAC more closely here, and know what's coming out in advance does not mean every WAC collector does the same. WAC has their defenders, but I can't see any actual logical reason why anyone would need to defend their poor communication here. It is obviously a huge weak spot for them that could be easily remedied. A huge portion of this thread for the last year has been a result of that poor communication. Not knowing when or how we'll get announcements, and wondering every day if it's today, or next week, etc...

The announcements have not come through Facebook for many months now. I would estimate almost a year. Perhaps they get posted days to weeks after, but that is not the platform being used for day-one announcing of WAC titles.

The way we have been finding out about releases are mostly through retailer leaks or the occasional announcement officially on a forum such as HTF.

Nope u are 100 percent wrong ----------- after seeing all the people complaining and trashing WB I shared with Tim and said how great if you could get an exclusive he immediately contacted Mr F and within 15 mins announced the titles GREAT now that Mr F will announce the titles on the podcast ---- it comes from Mr F and instead of being happy people now complain again! I was one of the first members on Tims FB page never emailed him so your facts are all wrong

I would guess that when they originally let George and company go, the logins for the Facebook page and YouTube were changed an a lowly WB intern takes care of those now.

I too would love they be more active in announcements but they’d need someone to write up a press release with a list of extras and details on the restoration. They may not have anyone on staff for that currently. George hopping onto a podcast is something he does without getting paid and doesn’t require copy going through approval channels at a large corporation. I wouldn’t be surprised if stuff like that has to be looked over by a WBD lawyer each month, costing more money.

don’t forget that they ended up skipping a month due to not being able to ensure they could make release days with the current fulfillment issues. As frustrating as it is, they may want to have stuff not be loudly broadcast in case they cannot make a release date. Ultimately they end up disappointing us in a different way but who knows.

So you were the guy.

It just seemed odd that the announcements came from you contacting Tim, then Tim contacting George and then him allowing you to post it on a forum.

Certainly not the kind of direct channels we were anticipating, but kudos to you for working it on your end.

George Feltenstein said all 5 April releases are from 4K restorations and are actual WB movies to celebrate WB's 100th anniversary.
