I have the Second Sight set, and can't remember if I've ever actually seen this movie or not. I know I've definitely seen the 2004 remake.

With that being said, which cut/version should be watched first? I generally try to watch Theatrical Cuts first; just because those are the first/original way audiences were able to see things back when the movies were released.

That's a good question. I'm trying to imagine what I would appreciate now and in what order if I had never seen the film yet, or really couldn't remember it. I think I WOULD roll with the TC first. I'd follow it up with the extended Cannes after that, to see whether the added material really improved the film experience for me. The Argento cut is a fun, wacky wild card that I'd watch as an entertaining curiosity, but only after having seen the TC and Cannes at least once each beforehand. YMMV.

It's awesome that your first "memorable" experiences with this film will be from the Second Sight 4k uhd set.

Wait, there's bonus content? I though the Argento cut was the bonus content

I personally prefer...
Cannes > Theatrical > Argento

I just like spending more time with the character I love.

I gotta say, I don't get around to listening to commentaries often, but the commentary by David, Ken, Gaylen and Scott on the Argento Cut is so damn fun to listen to. I listened to it a lot on the old Anchor Bar DVD, and glad it followed over to the 4K!

Afaik HBO is in it somehow. And they seemingly don't give a crap about their back catalogue anymore. So maybe that's the reason.

Romero I believe specifically stated the 3hour cut of Martin is "his cut". I like Martin a lot, not as much as Dawn, but it's great. And for his fans to be deprived of his vision of one of his great films, is an insult to the man. The fact that I believe he stated "No, the one you all got is his vision, we don't want this other cut muddying that up (paraphrasing) is even more infuriating, because it's said he would have allowed it for 200/300k (reliable source). So.... you don't want it "muddying things up" but for the right price you will? Absolute scumbag.

I cannot tell you all how much Second Sight's LE release of Dawn of the Dead means to me. Not only is it my favorite horror movie, it's my favorite movie. I can watch that thing, and immediately watch it again and still have just as much fun. I have seen it more than any movie I own, and quote it endlessly. I always go out of my way to sell anyone on it who is even considering getting it. Hell, when Second Sight initially announced the 4K release, it prompted me to finally buy a 4K Player, 4KTV and a Region Free player for the extras disc.

Rant over

We can only hope whomever has the 3 hour Martin print gets the movie scanned and uploads it on the internet for fans to see. That's the only work-around unless Ruby comes around.

As with all things regarding stubborn people, perhaps their estate will prove more amenable.

Agreed. Theatrical is pretty solid all around. The Cannes cut can get a bit bogged down at times, and Argento's cut eschews all the humor and a lot of the pot so that we can just watch a bunch of violence. My only complaint regarding the TC (aka the true director's cut) is that the dock scene doesn't make much sense. The Cannes cut makes more sense in this regard. I think I understand why Romero trimmed it. I'm guessing he wanted to keep the film rolling, and not get bogged down with a throwaway plot point.

Anyway, all that said, all three cuts have their pros and cons. They're all worth watching. Just make sure you avoid the 154 minute cut that's been floating around since at least the 90s. Some wacky Germans decided to put together a ramshackle cut made from as much footage as possible from the Cannes and Argento cuts. (I could be wrong but I think the TC is just a trimmed-down Cannes cut, with no extra/alternate footage.) It's a mess, not to mention both cuts use alternate takes in some cases.

So why did this shot have very different framing between the Theatrical and European cut?

Late edit: I'm aware of the soundtrack area with both the OCN and IP. Should've clarified earlier, I was just wondering why the framing of this shot in the OCN transfer seems closer to the Open-Matte-ish FR 4K rather than the properly framed 4K they did themselves.

European cut scan had soundtrack area visible. Second Sight version tries to correct it but there were limits. That shot in particular I don’t know why because it’s cropped the other way around!

To further expound upon this; the original negative is conformed to the US cut. The other cuts were scanned from other sources, and they were scanned with too much soundtrack area visible. Second Sight is not at fault for that and they tried working around it best they could.

If they insist on not releasing it in the USA, they should at least make it available to purchase digitally. Maybe if it sells well digitally, the fool that owns the rights, will be inclined to a physical release?
