A24 only having the commentary does make it feel like you're not getting enough for the money, but if I'm being totally honest, I'd never watch any special features or commentary anyway. I only tend to watch bloopers, don't even bother with deleted scenes anymore.

Had I known none of that information was available, I might have settled into the mood of it better.

Still not seeing where the textual evidence for "Sophie watching back 20 years later trying to come to terms with her relationship with her dad" is, though (yes, the final shot, but that hardly makes it a lens through which you can watch the film on first viewing, and still doesn't support all the relationship stuff). Or what the weird flashing lights sequences were about.

Dunno. Just felt like it raised a lot of questions and didn't really give any answers, but not in a way that felt intentional.

I got none of that. Couldn't recognise jack shit in the rave sequences, "amicably" is somewhat implied but not stated all that firmly, and the rest just wasn't in the film at all as far as I noticed.

Seems to be treated as a given that she never saw him after the event of the film, although, again, not in the text.
[Show spoiler]My understanding is that her dad was severely depressed, not because her parents broke up which isn't as recent as it's made to seem on wikipedia. They never say why or when they broke up, as that's not the point of the film, but he talks about having broke up with somebody and how her teacher is pretty, which obviously shows some time has passed. He was shown crying naked on the bed, he almost seemed to have tried to drown himself in the ocean at night, always trying to calm himself with the tai chi, etc. So it seems like this was just an annual trip her and her parents would take but now that they're not together, it's been a time they just would spend together instead... but this trip the focus of the film because it's possibly the last time she saw her father as, to me, it seems he killed himself either while on vacation after she left or sometime after he went home himself. And now that Sophie is a parent herself and probably the same age (her girlfriend says happy birthday) she's looking back on the home video of the last holiday with her dad which was around the same age to come to terms with his emotional state, she might be going through the same.

The rave stuff to me was his mind, a visual representation of his anxiety and depression... and adult Sophie is screaming at him for her own issues surrounding him.

I tried changing the release date to April 7th, since it's currently listed as March 7th even though that's just the date it's available for pre-order, not the release date, and it got rejected... and then today a 2nd entry incorrectly labeled as a "digibook" was added with April 7th lol

I don't think Wikipedia makes it seem recent - frankly I was wondering if they were even ever together or if it was just a one-night stand that ended in a kid.

I can see where the reading comes from, but I just think it needs way more textual support than it gets, and framing it all as "Sophie looking back" is dumb when we only find that out in the last shot of the film (and several scenes from the vacation occur without her present, so...WTF?).

I found a podcast feed that uploads commentaries, so I listen to them while driving or doing dishes or whatever. No way I'd have time to watch the movie a second time with the commentary on these days.

There's a scene in the film where Sophie questions her father on why her parents still say 'love you' to one another even though they're not in a relationship; the dialogue makes it fairly obvious that it was a relationship at one point in time.

While she is looking back through the video tapes, ultimately that (along with the fact she has the carpet) mostly serves to confirm her identity rather than elucidate anything about the formal structure of the film. The structure is divided between the two time periods but is not mere flashback / flash forward which would restrict it to Sophie's perspective.

But that's my point, all the synopses say it's a film about Sophie looking back and trying to understand, but it can't be a film about that because the entire thing is over before that happens.

There are literally scenes of Sophie in the present day throughout the film. We see her as an adult, and she has tapes. We see her as a child recording things with a camcorder, and as an adult she is watching them on her TV. The movie implies a lot but it is not impossible to read what’s happening. I’d give it another watch.

This has one of the best portrayals of depression I've ever seen in a movie, really well done and superb performances.

There are two, which total 38 seconds.

It's literally the last shot of the movie. It can't be the premise of the movie if it doesn't happen until the last shot.

Obviously I didn't know that was the case, but when they were doing stuff through the camera as if it was being watched back or showing stuff multiple times, I had a feeling it wasn't completely just a linear type thing.

This film slayed me. I think over time more people will discover it and it will grow in reputation. I don't know... it stuck with me more than dozens of other films released over the past few years. Maybe it's not for everyone.

The last 5 or so minutes...

Same here... I caught this film twice in theaters and those final moments in the film just made me speechless as I was completely gutted. Definitely one of the best films (for me) of 2022!!!

Looking forward to owning and revisiting this masterpiece come April!

I don't own the MUBI version but I have tried other discs including the MUBI Blu-ray of "Benedetta" and I can confirm the region hacking doesn't work on the Panasonic player.

I'm also pretty certain this is a pressed disc, but I've gotten quite a few BD-R releases that used the Blu-ray logo so I don't know how strictly enforced that is anymore.

Scratches made in Mexico?

Mine is supposed to be here Tuesday, but seeing how big the box is, it'll be out for delivery on Tuesday and the most of our mail carriers will leave a pink slip and I won't get it until Wednesday, because they claim there's no secure location or that nobody is home, but in reality they just won't go up the driveway and if it doesn't fit in the mailbox, they don't do anything else.

Ended up getting it early, and it came in a normal size box so it actually fit in mailbox lol Did have a little scratch near the edge of the disc but tried the FF trick and it didn't mess up so I guess it's fine... the slipbox is fine but the inside looks like they glued it wrong. The front goes further down which makes it difficult to get it out of the box (you can see where it's intended to be bent but it's bent lower down instead) and on the inside it looks like they tried to correct it but it started to tear so they just left it alone. Contacted A24 about it.

Marcel the Shell had no problems, looks great and no scratches, and no wrong format sent like people were getting when it first came out.
