If you game or don't want to screw around w/ updates then the PS3 is a great choice.

If you won't use it for games, and don't mind using USB/ethernet for updates then check out the standalones.

I use a PS3 and wouldn't trade it for any other player available, including the Oppo.

I agree with 'Another Dude'. The PS3 is irreplaceable. For me, the PS3 is a must-have, and stand-alone players are just added luxury.

Can anyone tell me if the PS3 will play burned BD-R's? My LG-BH200 does, but only with an older firmware. I'd heard a rumor that a firmware upgrade on the PS3 has rendered BD-R's unplayable.

Note: I'm not referring to AVCHD.

Love mine. Was able to buy one of the old 60gb models (with the full PS2 backwards compatibility) from a friend of my brother's for $200. Works like a champ now going on almost a year. Don't have a whole lot of Blu-Ray discs yet (9) but slowly getting there.

Just one game, NHL09 (and will purchase NHL10).

And a word of advice if you purchase one. Go to one of the bigbox stores (Wallyworld, etc) and spend the $25 on the Blu-Ray remote for the PS3. A lot easier to use than trying to use one of the controllers.

I don't know about the burnt disc's but I have had my PS3 for just under a year and love it. Also it's a great gaming buddy. And it don't hurt that you can veiw the web on it either, even though I have a laptop. the PS3 is the dream system in my opinion. NEVER has a problem playing any Blu new or old. AND its lightning fast.

Cool

You will do MORE with a PS3 than you will EVER do with a stand-alone Blu-ray player.

And my favorite thing is not understanding AT ALL what people are talking about when they complain that it takes forever for a Blu to load

Hey,

I have an XBOX360 and want to get a PS3 but wasn't sure if it would be smarter to just get the player since I have the 360. I guess the more the merrier. Haha thanks guys :-)

Perfect wording. The PS3 is a must-have for me, but a stand alone would have the convenience of less noise and less heat. It would be a luxury item.

Well, OP, it looks like you made up your mind. Also, if you play online, the PS3's free online gaming is much cheaper than XBox LIVE.

I love my ps3 my only grip is that it doesn't play anything Pal, but the 360 will so it's not really the end of the world.

PS3 is best value blu-ray player, but depend which version you getting, try to avoid get the old 80gb, or 60gb version, those had high speed fan which might cause noise and heat that might dispute your blu-ray experience.

I try several stand alone blu-ray player, panasonic bd60 and oppo bdp83, any of those 2 actually provide better than picture than my ps3, if the film has grain it will likely show in the ps3, but didn't in my bd60 or bdp83. speed in ps3 is second or the fastest in the market today. What it nice it has build wifi one thing most blu-ray do not had.

But ps3 could drop its price anytime now, since many game studio is threat to stop making the game in ps3 if price not drop, also of the slim ps3 rumors.

Also ps3 do not send sound codec to the receiver, it decorde themselve then send as pcm which receiver won't do the work.

Default PS3 BD Playback on Non-HDTV

Is this possible? My gut tells me no because movies on BD are HD content and would therefore require a HDTV. Am I right?

You can get up to 1080i with the proper equipment on a non-HDTV but in order to get FULL 1080p you need an HDTV with HDMI cabling.

I use to watch Blu-ray movies and play Blu-ray games all the time on my 27" CRT. It's no problem at all. I was a little hesitant at first too because the Blu-ray cases say they require a HDTV and Blu-ray player. They require a Blu-ray player but you can use whatever TV you want as long as you have the proper hook up. That goes for any HD content as well. When I first got my HDTV, it crapped out after two weeks. I ended up hooking my HD cable box to my old CRT and I was watching HD programming on it as well.

Huh?? 720p and 1080i are considered HD. Non-HD is 480i/p (576 in other parts of the world).

PS3 is a good player with lots of extras that some people might not need. Plus it's still a bit expensive. If all you want to do is play movies, you can get a good stand-alone for about half the price of a PS3.
Other things to consider are universal remote compatability, bitstreaming vs LPCM, analog outputs if you don't have an HDMI reciever, and power comsumption.

Yes, PS3 will play back on any TV that you can watch a DVD on. Actualy the default cable on PS3 is a composite.

I bought my PS3 60GB within the first few weeks it came out. It WAS the only Blu-Ray player less than $1000(at $600). It WAS the only player possibly to be updated to Profile 2.0(BD-LIVE) which I cared at the time but dont care much for it now. It was NOT an upconvert DVD-player at first then firmware updated added that but was a terrible upconvert player. Update 2.00 fixed that issue and now its an above average upconvert dvd player. It did not work with my Harmony 1000(then I replaced with 1100 but wouldnt work with any universal anyway).

All of those considered it was still the best value so I purchased it over the rest of the standalone player at the time and I dont game at all(but owning PS3 made me buy 20-25 games)

After a short time I purchased a LG BH200 standalone HD-DVD and Blu-ray combo player. I love it and use it more than PS3. Its slower but not much than PS3. It's not as noisy as PS3(I know my 1st gen is the noisiest but still PS3 is loud in general) I can use my Harmony 1100 with it. You can easly modify it to play all regions of DVDs, HD DVDs and Blu-rays Pal/NTSC. Its a good upconvert player.

Then I owned several other blu-ray players and my PS3 is collecting dust in the last year or so. I am not really saying its a bad player but its not the right choice for everyone anymore. I do not regret buying it as my first blu-ray player and I believe I will still use it on several occasions for gaming with friends but its not a movie player for me anymore. (and yes I did buy the logitech adaptor for harmony but still I like the movie player feeling and gui of standalones vs PS3 gaming orientated GUI.

I recommend finding previous generation pioneer blu-ray players or a samsung 2500 at least. this year standalones are very cheap built. they comprimised alot to make them cheaper. I dont think we will see any advancement on many blu-ray players other than lower prices. 2008 players are already at maximum samsung bd2500 is a bd-live netflix enabled HQV reon powered player and if found, it can be had for much less than its retail $400 at the time. then new 3600 and 4600 are downgrade over 2500 or 2550. LG390 is still a fine unit for 2009s. It would be the one if I ever purchased a blu-ray player around this time. LG should read all disc formats BD-R included since its optics are less picky then most others. it will be good with scratched and damaged discs as well.
