PlayStation Showcase 2023 - Accessories Sneak Peek

In the above video, Jim Ryan says:
Quote:
We will launch a dedicated device that enables you to stream any game from your PS5 console using Remote Play over Wi-Fi. Internally known as ‘Project Q,’ it has an 8-inch HD screen and all of the buttons and features of the DualSense wireless controller.
Sony's press release incudes a few more details:
Quote:
In addition to highlighting its robust software roadmap, SIE also announced Project Q, a dedicated device launching later this year that enables you to play any compatible(1) game installed on your PS5 console using Remote Play over Wi-Fi(2). With a vibrant 8-inch LCD screen capable of up to 1080p resolution at 60fps, the device delivers crisp visuals and smooth gameplay streamed from your PS5 when you’re away from your TV. All of the buttons and features of the DualSense wireless controller, including adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, are featured on the device(3).

(1) Games that require a VR headset (PlayStation VR or PlayStation VR2) or additional peripherals (other than a DUALSHOCK 4, DualSense, or DualSense Edge wireless controller) are not compatible. Games that must be streamed on PS5 using a PS Plus Premium membership are not compatible.

(2) Device requires broadband internet Wi-Fi with at least 5Mbps for use. For a better play experience, a high-speed connection of at least 15Mbps is recommended. The quality and connectivity of your play experience may vary depending on your network environment. A PlayStation 5 console and a PlayStation Network account are required.

(3) Haptic feedback and adaptive trigger features are only available when those features are supported by the game being played.

PS Remote Play allows you to
Quote:
Stream your PlayStation games1 from your console to your phone, tablet, laptop, desktop, PS5 or PS4 consoles.
Quote:
What do I need?

PS Remote Play is a feature available on all PS4 and PS5 consoles. All you need is:
  • Your PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition, PS4 or PS4 Pro2 connected to a broadband network.
  • A compatible device – also connected to your network.
  • The free PS Remote Play app.
  • A DUALSHOCK 4, DualSense, or DualSense Edge wireless controller.
  • At least 5Mbps internet - we recommend at least 15Mbps for a better experience. If you choose to use a mobile data connection to access Remote Play features, this will use your mobile data allowance. If you exceed your mobile data allowance, you may be charged by your mobile provider.
  • A compatible PlayStation game.

For those curious about Project Q, but not sure how functional it will be using PS Remote Play is, why not try it out now by pairing a DualSense controller with your mobile device and/or PC? Sony also promotes Backbone as a BYOD alternative.

Android (USB Type-C)

Razor Kishi is another BYOD alternative.

I used to use remote play a lot on my ipad/laptop with a controller, but now I usually play native steam deck games if I’m watching the tv, which made Steam become my main gaming platform

If they they managed to make remote play better than the non dedicated devices, I’m interested

If I was interested, I would have hoped for a way to plug in the display controller, as holding a charge and having to recharge is a hassle IMO. I want the option to have a plug in adapter, not to charge, but to power it.

If the new system was 49.99, I'd be interested potentially, if you could download the games instead of only streaming. In other words, it's not made with me in mind. I'd guess 199.99 minimum price, and 299.99 max price if they want to sell units.

It’s basically Vita 2.0 meh, no thanks. I want to see the PS5 slim, not this garbage. Why Sony now wants to compete with Nintendo Switch, who knows. This thing will flop badly.

I could see this thing maybe taking off in the Asian markets if the price is right. For what this is, I'd say the price needs to be 150.00 on the low end but no higher than 200.00. I mean, what are we talking about here, tech wise? A split Dualsense controller, a cheap 1080p LCD screen, and WiFi? There's no processing power in this thing, no storage, no RAM, etc. If this costs more than 200.00 I think it would be dead in the water.

it's not a vita 2.0, and they're not competing with the switch. but they should, handheld is more popular than ever

If this device requires wifi range of the PS5, then I guess it's mostly for a family household, where a kid could be streaming PS games with it while the others play the console. Otherwise, the limited range really restricts the system.

What is the demand for this with PS5? Will Switch users consider this device for PS5? It looks like a Switch design in how the controller splits in two with the screen in the middle.

If it functions the same way as Remote play on the phone, then I don't want it if it doesn't at all have cloud gaming. I just can't figure out Remote Play, I heard it can run with the PS5 while in Rest mode, but it turns on every time I try.

Remote play requires an internet, but you can use it from anywhere, you don't have to be close to the ps5

and you can't play 2 games (like your example), the ps5 runs the game like it normally does, and you stream it to the Q, so it's basically like a wireless screen with a controller

for example, if you're playing from outside the house and someone turns on the tv, they can watch your game

I don't think the demand is high for something like this, specially because you can already do this with your phone or tablet + a ps5 controller

most people would prefer a dedicated handheld that can run its own game without the ps5 and internet

Remote Play wakes up your ps5 from rest mode, but you can't run the game while it's in rest mode

I understand, thanks Talal.
So it can be accomplished with a smart phone and controller. That's cool, I didn't know that was possible with PS5. i wonder if those larger tablets work too probably, for a larger screen.

I’d be much more interested in a Vita 2.0 than what little we know of Project Q. Also, I don’t think any PS5 slim rumors have been substantiated. It would be nice though, especially if they can find a way to reduce the heat output (summer is coming).

Right, that was kind of the message in post #2. A reminder that PS Remote Play is available now with equipment you probably already own. It’s ok, maybe Project Q will make it better but who knows.

One of the strangest video game devices I've seen in ages. Not sure what Sony is thinking with this thing, but I see no real chance it's anything other than a total flop. Nobody outside of a tiny niche of gamers are paying $200-300 for what is basically a Wii U controller.

I don't quite understand why people keep drawing this comparison. The functionality of this controller is quite different to the Wii U controller in that, Project Q will do remote play from any WiFi hotspot. The Wii U controller practically had to be in the same room as the console it was tethered to in order to work. I do agree that this thing probably won't appeal to anyone other than a very specific demographic. However, I still say it might catch on in the Asian markets.

I disagree. Project Q practically requires a constant high speed internet connection, thus more or less requiring you to be at home for it to work. Do you seriously think this device will be very functional on a train or in a cab? I sure as hell don't. If anything, Project Q might be MORE restrictive than the Wii U GamePad in where you can play from.

I'm just telling you what it says in the product description. It requires a WiFi connection at minimum 5 mbps speed, with 15 mbps recommended. That is not THAT demanding. It says absolutely nothing about having to be home on your own network. You can dispute this to your heart's content but youre basing it on your own assumptions, not the information provided.

As I said before, I believe this could be popular in the Asian markets where mobile gaming is more valued and their internet infrastructure is way better than our own.

I wish this thing was more like a Wii U gamepad since I'm still upset by how criminally underutilized the asynchronous multiplayer functionality was on that thing.

I agree, I know people are using the wii u gamepad comparison as a negative, but as someone who uses handheld only at home while watching tv, I wish this used the same technology as the wii u gamepad

but that would be very niche, most people would want to use it outside the house

My phone can do a hotspot so I guess I could play my PS5 anywhere with this thing but i think I'd rarely actually want to play it somewhere else so I don't see myself getting this.
