It's a big relief that the gap between the Japanese and American theatrical releases is much smaller this time around. The wait for Shin Godzilla to make it to the West was excruciating!

I hope that means that I think it means. There's still a chance they meant "across the country via Fathom Events" which is not wide.

I am very intrigued by the return to the post-war period, especially since Yamazaki had been in hot water before for how he portrayed history in The Eternal Zero.

Goddamn, that looks incredible! I'm so glad they are going back to post-war and what made Gojira so damn great! I loved Shin Godzilla but we never really needed a sequel. I cannot wait for this!

It's crazy awesome that we're getting two new Godzilla films within four or five months apart from each other.

Would have preferred more from the Shin Godzilla continuity (the most interesting thing to happen to the franchise in literal decades) but this looks promising enough.

Apparently it is somehow tied to the Shin film, but I have no idea how. Prequel? I believe the 2016 mentioned it was the first time a creature of that kind appeared.

That looked awesome! I enjoyed Shin Godzilla and I’m loving the design of Godzilla much better in this one and am hoping they’ll up the action this time. Shin was great but almost a little too talky if you know what I mean

Yeah, I think Shin is better off just remaining a standalone entry. I would only be in favor of a sequel if Anno and Higuchi were to go even further with the "evolution" concept, but we already know Toho wouldn't allow that.

And I like that both sides have carved out their own, very different respective niche. Hollywood's take, the MonsterVerse, has established itself as lighthearted, over-the-top popcorn entertainment. Meanwhile in Japan, Toho's entries aim for something more serious and thought-provoking.

There's room for both, and I'm glad to be getting both.

Yeah, that teaser trailer definitely makes this upcoming Godzilla film look badass (and very promising).
Leave it to the Japanese filmmakers to rekindle my faith in God...zilla.
Here's some "Bay Area love" for ya... THRASH!

Godzilla Minus One Synopsis Revealed

Quote:
Godzilla Minus One will be written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki (Stand By Me Doraemon 3, Lupin III: The First) for Toho. Slotting into the Reiwa storyline for the franchise, Godzilla Minus One is teased as such by Koiju Ueda, President of Toho International, "Set in a post-war Japan, Godzilla Minus One will once again show us a Godzilla that is a terrifying and overwhelming force, which you already get a sense of from the teaser trailer and poster...The concept is that Japan, which had already been devastated by the war, faces a new threat with Godzilla, bringing the country into the 'minus.'"

Regal's social media pages have posted that it will be coming to Regal theaters on December 1st, meaning that this will indeed be a wide release

Spines are reminiscent of Millennium Series. Jury is out for me on those, but I am not a fan of the Millenium design (sorry, Shinji, no offense).
It also looks like they took some design cues from Legendary. I would have personally liked something just a little bit more distinctive compared to Legendary, but pretty cool overall I really like it! I hope that synopsis is light-hearted compared to what we get. A whole nation getting so utterly destroyed they become a (Negative) Nation? Dark stuff.

I love having serious dark Toho Godzilla while Legendary does the more kid-friendly wild weird fun Godzilla.

Yeah, the design is like an amalgamation of various takes on Godzilla over the years. The head/face is pure Heisei; the very reptilian, scaly and bumpy skin texture brings to mind the American MonsterVerse and Stan Winston designs; the massive spines are definitely part of that Millennium, early-to-mid '00s "extreme" aesthetic. I will have to see it in full, moving around, to judge it better. But so far my feelings are more positive than negative.

And yes, I hope it doesn't hold back! I enjoy Shin Godzilla, but one aspect I'm not super fond of is that it's told almost entirely from the perspective of those working within/under the higher levels of government. Their planning to defeat Godzilla, the bureaucracy of their decision-making, etc.

There's value in that too, but we've also seen it several times before. There's been far more focus on politicians, scientists and military personnel in this franchise over the decades. The "important" people. Personally I've always thought there's some missed potential in the Godzilla series - and the giant monster genre in general - in that far too few movies show the civilian perspective. The chaos, the utter terror experienced by the common man, woman and child on the ground during such an attack. The countless lives extinguished and affected.

I hope we get some of that in this film.

The kid standing there in the running crowd may end up being a nod to the mother and child in 1954 along with a train car.

The face is very Legendary. I feel the same, overall positive. Gotta see it.

Looks awesome! I'm Godzilla greedy. Why not have Legendary, Minus, and Shin? I'd still like to see what those creatures on Shin's tail are and where they came from. Plus, where they were going to take this story.
