Looking to find its way and pull boys in, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is getting a mid-week start here with previews yesterday grossing $3.85M. Showtimes started at 2PM for the Jeff Rowe-directed feature and the outlook is $30M over 5-days for the net $70M production. Some trackers have it at $40M. Mutant Mayheim is booked at 3,513 locations today and will expand to 3,851 theaters by Friday.

Given the Barbenheimer of it all, you gotta discount some of these movies in the marketplace. Tracking was bullish on Disney’s Haunted Mansion before opening with $30M-$40M; that was before they knew what Barbenheimer really was. That theme park ride movie opened to $24M, $200K shy of the 2003 version of the film which did $24.2M (unadjusted for inflation).

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, from Nickelodeon and Seth Rogen’s Point Grey, is looking to be the family choice for the long haul into the fall. The movie is the best reviewed animated feature of this year to date at 95% certified fresh next to Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The audience score is 94% currently for Mutant Mayhem. Props to Paramount: They were the only motion picture studio to brave San Diego Comic-Con sans stars and show off reels of the pic to a near full house in Hall H.

Warner Bros. has The Meg 2 opening this weekend, industry estimates are in the mid $20M range. The studio’s Barbie will dominate in its third weekend with around $55M-$60M.

Last weekend during Barbie‘s second frame, she blazed a record final weekend of July of $217M. Last August, Sony’s Bullet Train was the last huzzah before a dead August into October, that was left barren of marquee product due to the post production logjam caused by Covid. This August will be significantly better. The first weekend of August last year did $92M for all movies. Between Meg 2, Barbie, Oppenheimer and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles alone, this weekend is bound to be well north of $115M.

Yesterday Barbie led all movies with $15.25M, +2% from Monday, for a running total of $123.2M. She’ll cross the $400M mark on Thursday, on her 15th day in release, faster than the pacing of Top Gun: Maverick (18 days) and The Super Mario Bros Movie (18 days) to that domestic B.O. benchmark.

$30M is really bad for Meg 2.

Meg 2 should have taken a bigger bite of the box-office

It's a cluttered line-up - too much competition. This should have released months ago or in the Fall.

The spoils of July are spilling over into August as Warner Bros.’ Barbie after a $11.8M Thursday, jetted across the four-century mark at the domestic box office in her 14th day –faster than Top Gun: Maverick and Super Mario Bros Movie– with a running total of $406.4M at 4,337 locations.

She’s poised to make around $55M in her third weekend, with Oppenheimer ringing in at least another $23M+; all of this spelling for a 3-day box office marketplace that will be exceedingly well north of last year’s $92M for the first weekend of August. The Christopher Nolan directed movie earned $5.58M yesterday at 3,647 theaters taking its two-week total to $199.86M.

Warner Bros. also has some lagniappe at the weekend box office with The Meg 2: The Trench which is expected to do between $20M-$30M. Last night from previews that began at 3PM, the shark sequel did $3.2M at 3,400 locations. That’s a pretty good result for a sequel that stars a shark: The first Jason Statham movie brought in $4M in previews before churning out a $16.6M Friday, and $45.4M opening off what was a very campy, satirical marketing campaign. The $129M costing Meg 2 has a 50% stake from China’s CMC. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes loathe the sequel at 28% worse than the first movie back in 2018 at 45%. It’s a popcorn film for the masses, not for the tweeds.

Meanwhile, Paramount/Nickelodeon/Point Grey’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem saw its 2 day box office rise to $15M. Thursday was $4.87M at 3,513, -52% from Wednesday, with the Jeff Rowe-directed animated movie ranking third for the day.

Disney’s Haunted Mansion ranked fourth on Thursday with an estimated $1.6M at 3,740, -10% from Wednesday for a first week take of $33M. The previous Eddie Murphy 2003 movie opened on a Wednesday over Thanksgiving and its first seven days grossed $35.4M (unadjusted for inflation).

Angel Studios’ Sound of Freedom booked at 3,411, did $1.47M yesterday, -6%, for a running four week total of $156.4M.

$1.3B for Barbie would put it second behind Mario. I think Barbie goes to $1.4B.

These super limited releases are irritating. Just like Cobweb, Til Death is playing at almost no theatres. I would have gone to see it.

I agree. Supposed they only have so much to get them in theaters. As a way to promote it in digital a few weeks later or for the upcoming spooky season.

Between the IP recognition and the good reviews, I’m betting on TMNT.

Just got back from seeing Shortcomings. Loved it. Charming is absolutely the key word to for this one but intelligent, insightful, brutally honest, funny, engaging all apply. For me, very little did not work. This really won me over although I will say it MIGHT be a little talky and a bit too low-key for some. This is my kind of pure pleasure summer movie, though.

Talk To Me after this weekend is at roughly 5.5x it's budget. Another huge win for low budget horror. M3GAN and Evil Dead Rise were others that flourished

$53M for Barbie and $881.6M worldwide so far, however the international weekend totals haven't updated yet. Hopefully it hits a Billion when they do.

Meg 2 - $30M
