THE DARK POWER (1985) KINO CULT #3
• 4K Restoration from the 16mm Original Camera Negative
• Audio Commentary by Director Phil Smoot
• Audio Commentary by Cast and Crew
THE TERROR OF THE TARHEEL STATE: Featurette with Director Phil Smoot and Cast
• Interview with Editor Sherwood Jones
• Image Gallery
• Limited Edition O-Card Slipcase
• Optional English Subtitles

Color 87 Minutes 1.78:1 Not Rated
Weekend party plans are derailed when an ancient Toltec curse unleashes an army of zombies upon a houseful of college coeds. But the odds are evened when whip-cracking lawman Ranger Girard (Western legend Lash La Rue) arrives to stage a showdown with the evil dead. The first of two films by North Carolina horror auteur Phil Smoot (Alien Outlaw), The Dark Power manages to be both nostalgic and irreverent as it revisits the creature feature phenomenon. This director-approved 4K restoration of The Dark Power showcases the early work of special effects masters Tony Elwood (Cold Storage) and Emmy Award-Winner Dean Jones (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) as well as, ahem, eye-popping cinematography by Paul Hughen (The Mandalorian).

KINO CULT #1 will be announced later this week or early next!

The member who posts here under "Smoot" is actually Director Phil Smoot of The Dark Power? Cool if so.

Nice slipcover, except for the font used for the title. That font is everywhere now and is used for a ton of crappy DTV modern films and major studios alike.

Just got an email from Kino that the Stone Cold blu-ray I ordered during the sale will no longer include the slipcover. I didn't even know that was a title holding up my order. It's been almost a month since I ordered.

In the future, I am going to start breaking up my orders into groups of 50 dollars. I knew going in that they don't ship partial orders, but I didn't expect this long of a delay. If the titles are back-ordered another month, does anyone know if they will partial ship then?

It sounds like they will just say if you are not happy, we will just cancel the whole order and go kick rocks. Just needed a good vent about this.

I guess I got lucky, because my big order placed on the (extended) final day of the sale shipped a few days later. Definitely the quickest turnaround to date for me with a Kino order. It probably helps that it included mostly movies from the WSL sale. To be honest, I have no idea if any of them are supposed to have slips. If they do, and I get one, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Maybe the Insider can let us know what is up with slipcovers lately? Live and Die in LA, Stone Cold and now Pretty Baby which isn't even officially out yet...Is there a problem with these being made? Hoping it isn't too widespread going forward...

We're printing the same amounts as always, they're selling fast.

Amazon usually wipes out more than half of our inventory and if some of it gets returned, we'll most likely have a mix of slipcase and non-slipcase product for a while.

The Dark Power really is a fun & goofy low budget 80s horror flick. The Rifftrax (not included, unfortunately) definitely adds to the fun but I'm certain will still be enjoyable enough without it. Will make a great double bill with Neon Maniacs.

Is that some Frank Frazetta artwork on The Dark Power cover?

Which I know from the album artwork, Face Stabber by Oh Sees.

I almost wonder if you should look into doing what a lot of the boutiques do with slipcovers~leave them for your online store and other small shops like Orbit, Grindhouse & DiabolikDVD.

Give Amazon slipless versions, especially because they don't even know how to ship movies without damaging them a lot of times...

This is exactly what happened to me a few minutes ago. I have bought from KL on pretty much every sale for years, and have NEVER had an issue. Made two purchases, and there they've sat for a month, unsent. And now no slipcover for literally the one title I wanted the most in that particular order. So, I took their recommendation to politely ask for the title to be removed from my order as it hasn't been packed or shipped yet. If it comes anyway, I'll be returning immediately. And, yes, I ordered To Live And Die In L.A., and I'm dying to see what I get there, too. No slip, and that has to go back too.

Yeah, honestly this particularly sale has just left a bad taste for me. Might have to slow down with the purchases in the future.

It's funny you can't even pre-order from KINO anymore and expect a slip. I don't care about them, but if you can't even fulfill your loyal customers who pre-order directly from you, then maybe look into fixing your business model. There's a sham going on here when you're "out" and the title hasn't even released yet.

Thanks for letting people know that don't have to rush to pre-order to get a slip. Now they can just wait for sales.

Does that mean that you already sold more copies of To Live and Die in L.A. than you did The Usual Suspects and Dressed to Kill that have been out for nearly a year? Or did you print more slips for those two?

How funny that I’m not the only one just wondering about this. I had to pay extra for To Live and Die in L.A. on eBay literally a week after this was released because I’m hell-bent on wanting slips and wanted a guaranteed slip.

If it’s true that Amazon pre-orders a lot of the titles with slips, then I find it odd that Kino wouldn’t just continue to print more for a new release for at least two or three months afterwards, especially if it sells well. After hearing that slips are no longer guaranteed for PRE-ORDERS, I’m starting to become concerned.

I must be the only one on this website that does not give a damn about having my disc packaged with a slipcover.

TADLA ran out of slipcovers already? My order from about three weeks ago still had it direct from Kino.
