Whats the deal with Blu Ray prices? I don't get them, is there a pattern? There are some phenomenal movies with 9.99 price tags, and then there are bad movies like DOOM and such with 14-24 dollar price tags. Then new movies are 24-30 dollar, but not all the time. It just seems like movies are every where in price. 10 dollars, 12 dollars, 14 dollars, 20 dollars, 25 dollars, 30 dollars. If i didn't know any better i would say companies are pulling numbers out of a hat and which ever number they get is the price of the movie.

And if companies can sell blu rays at 9 dollars, why not just lower the price of all blu rays to 9.99? And make new releases 15 dollars?

mainly because the movies that are $9.99 fall into one of 2 categories.
1. they are extremely old releases for the format, so have been in the market longer and thus had to drop in price to sell in comparison to newer movies...Beerfest, Aviator, Scooby Doo, Bullit, etc come to mind here.
2. the transfer itself isnt very good/or has a standard dolby digital 5.1 track attached to it. movies like last samuri is a movie that I picked up at the $10 shelf at Walmart that falls into this category. Solid movie, terrible audio and mediocre transfer.
Newer movies, although not always good movies, will always garner a higher price tag than movies that have been out a while. While Doom isn't a new movie in terms of theater release, it is very new on the format as compared to some of the movies that I have metioned above. The Street Fighter movie with Jean Claude Van Dam was released on Blu for $20, but the Shining could be found for under $10 in some places. Does that make Shining a worse movie? Hell no!
As for pricing and people complaining about it, most members on this forum are old enough to remember when dvd's came out and how costly they were until enough of america had replaced their vhs players to accomodate a new format. When the studios can make as much money, or better yet even more money, off of sales of discs at a lower premium cost THAT is when you will see the drop in prices. It is slowly happening. Being in a recession doesn't speed the process up though, so just be patient and eventually they will be priced like dvd's are currently, just not for a little while.

Your "good" movie is someone else's "dud" and vice-versa. The rest is about competition.

Because they want to make more money? Seems pretty straight forward to me. Why don't record companies sell albums at $1, they take pennies to create.

Because the $9.99 titles have been out since the format war and the ones for like $29.99 are new releases.

Blu-Ray will not fall to DVD pricing until after DVD is dead. And the way things are going, it's going to be a while.
