So I doubt what ends up on disc is one from 2017 (or it could have been out in 2022 for the anniversary?!) and especially no chance to be one from 2012. More likely is his latest approved version was supervised this year. Earlier this year before more Avatar movies consumed him. |

Cameron is such a stickler for technology AND a master filmmaker - not a good combination really. He's always going to be tempted to play with high tech toys to "enhance" his films. The sad part is, they don't need enhancing. Has Cameron ever said or hinted he dislikes the "scope" aspect ratios? I ask because even though he's shot many of his films in 2.35:1, I've seen reports of him preferring open matte versions for home video, which would be oddball. Maybe I'm misunderstanding what I've read?

To put that into context, Avatar is so inherently unfilmlike in its appearance anyway that jacking it up with a load of AI upscaling bollox isn’t the worst thing ever (though some scenes do indeed look shockingly poor). But even though a 35mm show like Titanic could badly suffer for this AI shite I’ve still gots to see it on UHD. I will however say that the remastered 3D version looked fine in the cinema, but that’s likely a combo of a typically low-contrast/brightness multiplex 3D presentation and the usual softening of projektion.

I'm keeping my VHS. At least the DNR was natural. 240 lines of resolution is good enough for me.
Joking, of course. Just poking a bit of fun at all the doomsayers already complaining. Can't wait for The Abyss announcement. 2004: Where the hell is The Abyss anamorphic DVD!?! 2006: Where the hell is The Abyss on Blu-ray!?! 2016: Where the hell is The Abyss on 4K!?! 2023: This will be a DNR disaster and will have crap encoding. Where the hell is my non-anamorphic DVD!?! ![]() |

The movie is actually about putting emotions into a story everyone is familiar with. Knowing what happens is built into it and the idea is that, by the end, you see it less as just some old story and more something that actually happened to real people.
